Have we discussed the Bucs not using their last TO at the end of the game?

Lost in the excitement of the Lions beating the Buccaneers to advance to the NFC Championship Game was that both teams made clock management mistakes at the end of the game.

When the Lions intercepted a pass with 1:33 left in the game, the Buccaneers still had one timeout. That meant that even if the Lions had used the full 40 seconds between kneeldowns, they couldn’t have run the clock all the way down — as long as the Bucs used their timeout.

The Lions knelt down anyway, and didn’t even take the full 40 seconds off the clock between kneeldowns. But the Bucs never used their final timeout. When Lions quarterback Jared Goff knelt down for the third and final time, 36 seconds were on the clock and the Bucs still had their timeout. It was fourth down, which meant that if the Bucs had called their timeout, the Lions likely would have attempted a 49-yard field goal.

If that field goal had missed, the Buccaneers would have had the ball at their own 39-yard line with about 30 seconds left, needing to drive 61 yards for a touchdown and then score a two-point conversion to force overtime.

Is it likely that the Lions would have missed the field goal, the Buccaneers would have scored a touchdown and two-point conversion and then won the game in overtime? No. Is it possible? Absolutely. And with the season on the line, a team should be doing everything possible to win. The Buccaneers just let the last 36 seconds run off the clock and took their timeout into the offseason.

This was definitely a weird sequence at the end of that game

And because the Lions mismanaged the clock, kneeling down before burning the full 40 seconds on each of the three kneel downs, Tampa Bay could have gotten the ball back with around 30 seconds left instead of 12.

Campbell admitted Monday that the Lions needed to do a better job of running down the clock.

“First of all, we didn’t handle that whole thing well on our end,” Campbell told beat writers. “We should have bled it more than we did. Look, I’ll be the first to admit that, and that’s on me. But yeah, we knew he had a timeout left. I could tell he wasn’t going to call it. That’s how it ended.”

Yeah that was a weird way to end a game. Did the coach get asked about it after?

i doubt they try a long field goal in that instance
the best you could hope for if you are the bucs is a hail mary

If you've got 30 seconds and the ball you can run several plays before you have to throw it deep

I assumed it was a graphical error and they actually did not have a timeout.

If that is not the case and scoreboard actually indicated they had a timeout available then the whole sequence is inexplicable and causes me to completely doubt both coaching staffs and Goff's decision making.

I’m not complaining but thought this incredibly odd as well. It’s not like there would have been 5 seconds left, they could have taken the TO around 30ish.

The Lions could’ve missed the FG, or even had it blocked, setting up great position for TB. Just seems like they gave up.

It’s highly unlikely they come back regardless what happens, and I realize they’re not Mahomes and the Chiefs, but never say never after that Bills/Chiefs divisional game 2 years ago.

well to start with, it was 1st down so it didnt matter

yes there was a 0.00000000009% chance of a fumbled snap if you call TO and make them snap it again, but get real.

The point of the article is Goff took a knee at 36 seconds and the Bucs still had a TO. Was their a graphics error? Because that's still a lot of time left.

According to ESPN play by play, they only used 2 timeouts, and it would have been 4th down.

no it wasnt a graphics error, they had 1 time out

he kneeled on 1st down, they have 1 time out, if they call a TO then they just kneel again on 2nd down and its over.

short of a winning the lottery odds miracle of fumbled snap, there was no way to stop the inevitable.

now if they could force a punt it would be different, but not calling the TO was the norm there in these situations

Biggest issue is how fast Goff snapped the ball. Bucs using a TO is a non-factor when you consider the Lions didn't burn nearly enough clock in between kneels. It could have ended very badly for the Lions, so I'm glad Bowles gave up after that last interception by Mayfield.

This whole thing really is bizarre
Bowles basically said he didn’t think the chances were good enough to take the TO.

You always force the opposition into that fourth down in a one score game. He could’ve forced a kick / punt with 10-35 seconds left, but he chose not to.

I honestly think he didn’t call the TO after the third down kneel as a courtesy. I don’t know why he didn’t call it after the first down kneel.

yeah "courtesy" is somewhat justifiable after the first couple of kneel downs. but Goff fricked up and kneeled too soon on the last play, they should have called a TOP at that point

I definitely thought that was weird, did anyone notice as well in the Bills-Chiefs game. The bills around 2:20 wasted about 20 seconds to get to the 2 min warning at the end of the game...I'm thinking they figured they'd make the field goal. But they weren't rushing at all.

Yes, and I can’t believe that there’s not more being made of this. It would have been 4th down with 30 seconds and the Lions have to either kick a fg or punt. The Bucs had a chance, however unlikely. That coach should be fired for that, this is a playoff game, not the last game of preseason.

It was dumb on both ends

The Lions took their knees too early to even allow it to be a discussion, but then once they did the Buccs should have called TO to try to capitalize on the mistake.

This one made sense - they wanted to score with as little time left. The biggest mistake was not making more of an effort to pick up one more first down.

I think he was implying that if the Bucs take the TO on 3rd down, there would have been about 30 seconds left. Lions most likely do a pouch punt to pin TB back instead of trying a long FG. TB would have the ball with roughly 25 seconds and no TOs and need to go 85-90 yards.

You have to call that TO and give your team a chance; even if your plan is to play the lateral game that rarely works.
