Had a discussion with a few buds around this, I personally think there was only 1 first baseman from that era that was better (Pujols). Majority of buds disagreed on that even though I made the argument that Votto’s stats outweigh Fred McGriff (another controversial HOF take)

Pros:
- 63 career war (if you’re into that)
- 6x All-Star, 1x MVP, 1x GG
- .920 career OPS

Negatives:
- Only 350 career homers
- a lot of competition to get in at the first base position.

What’s the MSB’s verdict?

He'll get in easily.

By JAWS metric he's an average hall of famer at 1st base. That plus his broad appeal personally? Done deal

That’s fair, spin-off question: Is Goldschmidt a HOF?

I say no, but Harold Baines has opened the floodgates.

No. If you have to think about it someone isn't a Hall of Famer.

Candidacy at 1B is not defined by hits. Votto led the league in BB 5x. He is 2nd all time amongst 1B in BB behind Bagwell. It’s hard to accumulate hits when you are walking

If Todd Helton and Fred Mcgriff are HOF’ers, then he is a shoe-in.

What fans don’t understand is that the people who control the Hall of Fame … and it belongs to a family in Cooperstown, not to MLB or the fans, it’s a private organization … want the flood gates open, they want new people coming in every year because if they don’t have a big induction ceremony every year it’s devastating to the economy there.

Whoever said a walk was as good as a hit, couldn’t hit…

(Yes that used to hang on the wall at Grand Slam USA in Elmwood)

That’s the same for the football HOF.

McGriff was a Veteran's Committee selection and Helton had to wait to slide in.

Votto will eventually get there. Most of the "Hall of Very Good" guys eventually get in through the back door via a coordinated campaign before they fall off the ballot or a reprieve from the Veterans Committee.
