Biles on floor. Don't like the music but execution and difficulty are fantastic.
This is Sandra Izbasa, 2008 Olympic champ on floor. Very good music to go with incredible execution. I'd like to see gymnasts return to this type of music. Seems to go with the movements better, but a lot of the gymnasts these days are looking for stuff that sounds more modern. I get it, but I don't think they're finding things that sound better, for the most part.

After 3 rotations, Biles in the lead. Score about 43, so she won't be hitting 60 tonight as she's done in the past. She and Jade were back to back on floor - two Olympic floor champs.

That, specifically, is the most subjective thing and is probably generational. That's nothing more than your opinion, which is totally fine.

I loved Biles' music as well as ol' girl earlier who had the Beyonce parts.

I see Suni limping. I think she's ok though.

Hezly Rivera, 16, in 5th place after 3 rotations. She has a legit shot to make this team, especially with all of the injuries we've been seeing.

Good night for Jocelyn.

Hezly felt super consistent at Nationals. Not great, just good all around.

1.) Jocelyn is really stubby looking.

2.) For as amazing a job the USOC is going with organizing and presenting these trials, NBC is doing as shitty of a job with the presentation. It's like the scores are an afterthought. Sometimes they don't even bother to flash them across the screen.

Yep. She needed to do well on floor and vault, and she did.

Suni up on floor.
ETA good score for Suni. She's had a good night.

She looks like a pocket.

NBC is awful. I think the announcers are great. I just think their coverage in all sports is a struggle.

She's only about 4 1/2 feet tall.

Yeah, I agree.

Anyone that has watched gymnastics for a long time might also notice changes to camera work. In the past they've let camera men roam around and it's been pretty obvious they get 'crotch shots' of these gymnasts. I used to not think there was this 'sexualization' of gymnasts because I am fascinated by the athleticism and that is primarily what caught my eye, other than the artistry. But after it was mentioned I started noticing in videos that they did such things. Once you see it, you can't unsee it and the gymnasts know, you can tell in some videos how they notice what's going on.

The thing is, a lot of gymnasts are children. It's really creepy once you finally notice it. NBC was bad in the past. They froze the view once on a gymnast just showing her crotch to the world for at least 15 seconds. I've made comments on sites and others have as well about how this needs to stop, and I think a lot of gymnasts may have done the same. We'll see how the Olympics are, though.

Biles' vaults were excellent. Great way for her to wrap up the night. Jade was very good as well.

Leanne Wong on floor to that French song that is Andrew Tate's theme song or something, I think.

I've honestly never noticed that. Speaking of camera work though, during one of the women's uneven bars routine earlier the camera was really low and behind the low bar at an angle and they had it locked on her instead of the bars so the camera was CONSTANTLY moving with her like WWE production.

Damned near made me sick.

Looks like the overall scores are
1 Simone
2 Jordan
3 Suni
4 Jade
5 Joscelyn

When things are posted with the total rollup I'll put them in the thread.

I didn't either until it was pointed out. This is 16yr old Melnikova from Russia, in Rio, 2016. She knows what the camera men are up to.

Here's where we stand after day 1.
Suni - top 3 in 3 events.
Simone - top 3 in 4 events.
Jordan - top 3 in 2 events
Jade, Tiana, Kaylia, Joscelyn, Shilese, Leanne - top 3 in 1 event.

Seems that Simone, Suni, Jordan are almost certainly going to be 3 of the 5. Due to injuries, I don't think we are looking at Skye, Kayla, or Shilese. All three would be on any nation's team. I'm guessing Jade gets a spot. Maybe Joscelyn gets the 5th spot. I'm sure Sunday will shake this up a bit.

Women (Day 1 of 2)
All-Around
1. Simone Biles — 58.9
2. Jordan Chiles -- 56.4
3. Suni Lee -- 56.025

6. Kaliya Lincoln -- 54.875
7. Hezly Rivera -- 54.825
8. Leanne Wong -- 54.75
9. Tiana Sumanasekera -- 54.7
10. Evey Lowe — 51.675
10. Simone Rose -- 51.675

Balance Beam
1. Suni Lee -- 14.4
2. Tiana Sumanasekera -- 13.95
3. Joscelyn Roberson -- 13.925
4. Hezly Rivera -- 13.7
5. Simone Biles -- 13.65

Floor Exercise
1. Simone Biles -- 14.85
2. Kaliya Lincoln — 14.15
3. Jordan Chiles -- 14.1

An embed of Simone getting standing ovation for big vault, seemed to be the biggest reaction of the night

So, two torn achilles at Trials. Skye and Kayla. Kayla is a UF gymnast and former World All-Around Bronze medalist, world team champion, and Pan Am All-Around champion. It's good the US is stacked with so much talent. Three have gone down it seems and all three would make any other nation's Olympic squad (Skye, Kayla, Shilese).

Men's Day 2 has begun. Guy who is mostly responsible for picking the team just said pommel is going to be important. It's generally a weak spot for the US men.

Men's team, most probable selection at this time based on scores is:
Frederick Richard (top score)
Brody Malone
Paul Juda
Asher Hong
Stephen Nedoroscik

ETA They are making the announcement now, team is as described above.

Alternates are Young and Wiskus.
