Ruth was the Ohtani of his era (that seems wrong)

Frank Robinson getting traded to the Orioles has to be an honorable mention.

I agree. If you do that and Ohtani gets hurt you loose your big bat and a big pitcher. Kid is a beast though.

Randy Moss, Marshall Faulk are NFL players that come to mind.

The Eric Dickerson trade was pretty big at the time. It also put Jim Rome on the map.

Trading Ruth to the Yankees is the reason the Yankees are a global brand.

Gretzky going to warm-weather LA is the reason you have teams in Dallas, Vegas, Tampa, Florida, Raleigh, Phoenix, and Nashville.

He single-handedly changed a niche Canadian/NorthEastern sport into a North American sport.

Gretzky due to the fact he was already the GOAT and had many solid years left to play. Ended up being a great move for the sport at the time.

Wouldn't that be on the same level of the Hornets trading Kobe. While both are great in their own right, at the time of the trade they hadn't done anything.

Yeah, I'm not going that far. Those markets getting teams was just the natural progression of expansion with all of the major Canadian and Northern US cities already having teams. If the NHL wanted to expand. Not really any different than the NBA expanding the Charlotte, Miami, Orlando, or MLB expanding to Miami, Tampa, Arizona, or NFL putting teams in Charlotte, Jacksonville and Nashville

If the NHL wanted to add new teams they had to go somewhere. Given cities like NY, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, etc already had teams, the league just followed the US population shift to more southern markets. Like the other leagues. It didn't really have much, if anything, to do with Gretzky going to LA.
