NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the league seeks a tougher penalty for Deshaun Watson because the quarterback's actions were "egregious'' and "predatory behavior.''

Last week, the NFL formally appealed Watson's six-game suspension, which was handed down by the NFL's disciplinary officer Sue. L Robinson earlier this month. At a league meeting called to formally approve the Denver Broncos' new ownership group Tuesday, Goodell was asked why the NFL appealed Robinson's decision and was seeking a suspension of at least a year for the Cleveland Browns quarterback.

"We've seen the evidence, she was very clear about the evidence, she reinforced the evidence,'' Goodell said. "There were multiple violations that were egregious and it was predatory behavior.''

Last week, the NFL appointed Peter C. Harvey, a former New Jersey attorney general, to hear the appeal of Watson's suspension for violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy. Goodell said Tuesday he did not know when Harvey would make a ruling.

quote:

Robinson issued the six-game suspension in a 16-page report, writing that "the NFL carried its burden to prove, by a preponderance of the evidence, that Mr. Watson engaged in sexual assault (as defined by the NFL) against the four therapists identified in the Report.''

She also said in the report Watson engaged in conduct that posed "a genuine danger to the safety and well-being of another person, and conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity of the NFL.''

Robinson wrote the NFL had recommended Watson be suspended for the entire 2022 regular season and postseason.

While relying on precedent, Robinson sought to differentiate between violent and nonviolent sexual conduct. Robinson concluded Watson's conduct "does not fall into the category of violent conduct that would require the minimum six-game suspension'' the league had established as "by far the most commonly-imposed discipline for domestic or gendered violence and sexual acts.''

Robinson also said Watson's "predatory conduct cast 'a negative light on the League and its players.'''

It's not just pure happenstance that they selected a former prosecutor rather than a judge to hear the appeal.

Goodell has a habit of "finding evidence" that no one else has seen or ever does see

We're still waiting on about 49,999 pages of evidence from Bounty Gate

Not one year 4 years… Goodell think his actions deserve at least a 4 year suspension… it his would basically translate to banning him for life

4 years would be even better. I wish he’d never play again.

Stop getting involved in these off the field matters, based on how badly they screw these situations up year after year I suggest they do it and do it soon

Deshaun Watson's conduct is a PR disaster. He's a pervert and predator. If you don't police this stuff the league will be full of Pacman Jones in short fashion entering strip clubs and making it rain.

I don't get it. Either they feel they have evidence he assaulted multiple women or they don't. He wasn't prosecuted by the law either. But their own documents in support of the 6 game suspension basically said he raped multiple women.

So either you can't prove he did anything wrong (as a court of law found) or you can. If you can't then there should be zero suspension. If you can, and your own documents make it clear you think you can, then he should be thrown out of the league permanently.

I can't see the middle ground here. Personally I think he's a predator. But if the courts couldn't get enough evidence to bring him to trial then I side with no suspension. But if the NFL feels they have enough for 6 games then to me it's probably enough for a lifetime ban considering the seriousness of the allegations and apparent findings by the NFL.

Exactly. Playing in the NFL is not a right. I am so happy the Saints did not trade for him.

I think Goodell has the blessing of the other owners to bring the hammer on Watson bc they were pissed at how Cleveland structured his contract to where he wouldn’t lose much money this season if he was suspended. Essentially enticing him to go there with the ridiculous guaranteed money down the road. Watson stood to lose about $300k this season which is nothing and no fine was even issued. If he’s out for this year, Cleveland once again made fools of themselves. I can’t see him being the same player after not playing for 2 entire seasons and his cap hit becomes extraordinary after next year I think.
