Elway was a good runner earlier in his career. It's crazy how much Mahomes resembles him physically with the barrel chest and they both kind of run the same way.
Stabler and Burrow to some extent too although Kenny was obviously a lefty had more of a 3/4 delivery.

2023:
Joe Montana didn't hesitate telling Men's Health his pick for the best QB of all time: Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino.
“Put Marino into today’s game where he gets free release...and his receivers, holy cow, weren't very big," Montana proclaims. "Now these guys are 6'4," 6'5." I think [Marino] is probably one of the most unsung heroes of the game. People don't talk enough about him or realize the numbers that he put up during the times that he put them up."
Beyond Marino's physical prowess, Montana's steely blue eyes lit up when remembering the disadvantages Marino overcame to put up the eighth-most passing yards ever and seventh-most passing touchdowns ever. Remember, Marino and Montana played in an era of football when 350-pound linebackers could press their full body weight on a quarterback after tackling them and freely target their lower extremities. Now quarterbacks are the most protected they ever have been, and Montana can't help but wonder how dominant the best QB ever would be in this era.

Lets be real, if Brees played in Marino's era, he wouldn't last a decade. If Marino plays in Brees' era, he's throwing for 60 TDS and 6k yards annually.
Not to mentioned Brees played most of his career in a dome as well in a warm weather division. Marino played outdoors while in the same division as the Bills, Jets, Pats, Colts.

I don't disagree with the placement of any of these since they're all historically significant and really helped the passing game grow to where it is now

So a guy picks one of his contemporaries that’s not surprising or unusual. If Marino played today his numbers would probably be like top guys of the last 2 decades. He was awesome but this lists frankly long ago jumped the shark. You like Montana are old so naturally favor the guys from when you were younger just like young guys will favor more recent guys.

Nothing says “real” like highly speculative unprovable opinions
Hyperbole like “this guy I love from the past” would have unprecedented stats today is just silly. If Marino played today his stats would be like PManning Brady, Rogers and Mahomes etc.
As for Brees he’s roughly the same size as Fran Tarkenton who played before Marino and before they changed the rules to favor passing in 1978

Rodgers is the benchmark for me. He's the greatest passer I've ever seen and I watched a lot of Dan. I don't think Marino would have been better than Aaron in this era.

Marino is overrated. He was mediocre when it mattered most. Not just in the NFL but in college. The 1980 Pitt team had four NFL Hall of Famers and multiple pro bowlers and still shite the bed.
I don’t know that Marino should have won a ring in the NFL because the NFC was hell during the prime of his career, but (if truly the GOAT) he should have at least made it to another Super Bowl because the AFC sucked and Miami always had solid to good teams. He also played for two HOF coaches in a warm weather city conducive to the passing game.
I think people overemphasize Marino’s 1984-1986 stretch within the context of a 17 year career.
Yes, Marino was a great QB. But, say, top five all time? I don’t think he was good enough in the big moments.

Anderson and Fouts were both better than Bradshaw not to mention Staubach. Any of those guys would have been an upgrade for the Steelers.
Fouts was a much better QB than Bradshaw and if you swap them, Fouts would have more than 4 Super Bowls and Bradshaw might not even be in the HOF.
And you can't talk about "era's" because they both played in the same damn era.

but why attack the basketball fans for wanting to win
They lost 1 game on the road to Florida St who finished the regular season ranked #2. They finished #3* and got screwed out of the Sugar Bowl vs #1 UGA for Notre Dame because back then the size of the fanbase that would travel took precedent over better matchups
* the regular season Pitt was #2 after the Bowls if ND had beaten UGA Pitt probably would’ve been #1

Staubach started 44 less games than Bradshaw and only has 5,000 fewer yards.

Or like when they changed the rules in 03-04 so the defense couldn’t mug the receivers? Or after that when you could touch the qb without getting a roughing the passer?
Brees would have gotten crushed in the 80s-90s just like Montana did. Brees is a great qb but nowhere near as great as Marino.
Fran was mobile in a similar way Archie was.

The changes in 1978 were even more drastic.

Of all the sports, football is a truly team game....it takes A LOT of players on your team, offense, defense, special teams, etc. to win. Steel Curtain was Bradshaw's best friend. Hell Noll didn't even want to start him half the time.
Judging QBs by rings is stupid. I'm not in that Camp.
I'm in the skill-set production Camp....how much better are you than your peers?
There's been 3 QBs who dwarfed their peers if the NFL had WAR....better version of QBR.
Roger Staubach
Otto Graham
Joe Montana
Modern era, Manning, Brady, etc. didn't dwarf their peers, I mean some average QBs were right behind them.
The average QB rating in 1972 was like 60....Roger Staubach was around 100 for a few years. In 1980, after he retired he was #2 all-time career passer rating..behind who? Still Otto Graham.
