For the most parts Max dominated races until Brazil. It took luck and drama for Mercedes to be in it up until that point.

Check the thread, everyone called it during the race. We did, the announcers did, Lewis did. No one understood it. They had the position even with the pit.

That wasn’t a fight. That was a gift to allow for what was a 14 second gap to close without having to close it with your cars pace.

Maybe Mercedes should have pitted Lewis under the safety car when they had the chance and not left him out there to dry. The cars should have been let through the precious lap so it is a moot point.

They only had position under the VSC. They couldn't have pitted under the Safety Car and maintained. Max wouldn't have come in.

I understand and didn’t understand it either. All I can figure is they were afraid of the Bottas incident from earlier this season. He still had amazing pace.

The Car itself was out there for 4 laps. There was time to tell them all to go. The issue was getting that done (them going fast) around the corner of the wreck creating a safety issue for those clearing it.

Watching Christian Horner watch that last lap was intense.

And then Ham would have been in second with fresh tires with Max on old.

Ham wins.

Dats what happens when you get a safety car. Hamilton has benefited from SCs PLENTY of times in his career.

Anyone can armchair after a race. He had pace on his older tires that would have carried him to the end. Had the original decision stuck Lewis wins on old tires. The decision changed which means the results did as well.
And crashes and safety cars are part of racing as they were this year and every year. RB rolled the dice on boxing which means they were in position to capitalize when circumstances presented themselves. Merc had more to lose by boxing earlier and rolled the dice by staying out.

To say it came down to one decision or eventuality is just wrong.

Eh not necessarily.

Verstappens tires were still plenty healthy. He would have been racing on decent rubber.

Hamilton’s tires were torched.

All the cars should have been let through though. The making up of rules on the fly are the worst part of F1. I don’t care who you were rooting for, Masi saying this is a motor race after the Farce that was the Belgian GP is laughable. They need clear and complete rules. The only thing that seems constant is their desire to maximize drama and that should not be the role of the officials.

For sure. This was a little more than a benefit though lol. I mean Max won the championship on the last because of it. That decision by MM changed history books. Just like in other sports, officials making the race deciding decision is never how you want it to be.

He probably would have passed him long before the safety car if he would have even ended up behind at that point.

Yep. Then he had to stack them passing with the safety car ending. Which defeats the point of letting them pass, unless the only goal was to put the #2 car in a better position.

He executed the result that SHOULD have been if he'd made the right call to begin with. It negatively affects the drivers down the grid, but as far as the battle for 1st is concerned, he did the correct thing.

Melt on, but we got the fairest result given the circumstances.
