Also did anyone see the clip where Hamilton was talking about RB having pace and said roughly "Checo was on my tail, so that tells you how much pace they had"

The quote
quote:
I had a great fight in the end with Sergio, but I have had that pressure many times in the past and it has been easy to manage. This battle shows how fast his car has been and he has done a great job. He has put pressure on me. consistent,

Hamilton is such a bitch.

Well, that doesn't come across as walking back the statements at all.

The positives are you will get paid well, rack up an impressive number of wins and podiums and share in some WCCs. The negative is you will be branded a #2 and likely be forever in a shadow like Irvine, Patrese, Coulthard, Barrichello, Webber, Brundle, Berger, Cevert, et al. The best you can hope for is your #1 has a crap year or gets hurt and you get a real shot like Irvine in '99 and Massa in 2008. Hell Massa was the WDC for a handful of seconds until Timo Glock couldn't hold out on dry tires and let Lewis past on the last lap of the last race.

I believe him on the Checo statement, the VB statement wasn’t even much of a walk back

Bottas, as well as most of the guys you mention, accepted their #2 status, and while they all whined as much as any F1 driver, they all knew their place. Webber is an exception, but he just wasn't as good as Vettel, whose style was apparently perfectly matched with the 2009-2013 version of an F1 car. It didn't help that Webber was a nice guy and a team player (coincidently, distinguishing characteristics of F1driverum numbertwosis).
But back to Bottas, a more apt comparison is Nico Rosberg since he had the same teammate and was on the same team. I never thought Rosberg was quite as good as Hamilton, but he wanted it so badly that it often looked to me that he drove desperately, to try to keep up with Hamilton. He didn't accept that he wasn't as good as Hamilton, and he managed to get the job done. So while people show sympathy for Bottas because they perceive the team is treating him unfairly, I just see a guy who isn't consistently good enough and doesn't have the killer instinct.
This incident between Webber and Vettel is the perfect illustration:
Vettel And Webber's 'Multi 21' Meltdown | 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix
quote:
Webber: "In the end Seb made his own decisions today and will have protection as usual and that's the way it goes."
Vettel was ruthless and the team was never going to punish him for not following orders because they knew that ruthlessness is the edge that wins championships. Also, more recently when Russell took out Bottas at Imola, while Mercedes was understandably furious with Russell, I knew it didn't hurt his chances to get signed to the team because he showed that ruthless "every inch of the road is mine" attitude that is needed to be a champion.
tl:dr - I have no sympathy for Bottas. His fate was his own doing, not because the team favored Hamilton.

Bottas and Rosberg were never on the #2 levels of someone like Barrichello or Irvine.
The Merc drivers were always able to race until they were out of contention for the WDC.
You are exactly right though, Bottas isn't on the level of pushing that edge like Schumi, Hamilton, Alonso, Max. That is why he ends up where he does.

Relevant and poignant podcast from Beyond the Grid with Bottas this week.
youtube link, but also found on Spotify and the like.
Gives some great insight into years at Merc.

Hamilton will take a new ICE.
Should be a 5 place penalty. (Post sprint race)
Pretty strong rumor that Otmar is leaving Aston and heading to Alpine. Wonder if a Merc team memeber is headed to Aston to head them up.

Not sure if anyone saw the freight delays, but Haas engines are missing
Everything is supposed to be in the pits tonight, but that is pretty funny.

The Brazil beach volleyball players this year were not attractive at the Olympics. Actually most beach volleyball players were not. Disappointing year
