I wouldn't go that far to say he made Belichick but it can't be ignored what his record is without him.

Bill Walsh? Had Joe Montana for his entire head coaching career.

the 49ers had great defenses then also. It isn't always about the head coach/QB combo.

John Madden. Those Oakland teams during the 70’s were great.

Oakland was the "wait till next year" Brooklyn Dodgers of the NFL. "Madden couldn't get past the Steelers" which is unfair because basically the entire 70s Steelers roster is in the HOF. He had to get through the Dolphins Dynasty and then the fricking "immaculate reception" steel curtain.

Once you hit the draft right, they were yours for life.

Yet despite this Madden's winning % is insane and for 3 decades they were the winningest team in all of sports percentage-wise.

Chuck Noll wasn't that good in the 1980s but his worst season post Super Bowls was 5-11. He had some downright awful quarterbacks.

Agreed. The one thing that fans were robbed of in the 70’s was a raiders- cowboys
SB. Very close like 5 times thigh.

Or Chuck Noll.

Outside of one 7-8 yr run and the ability to keep all of his draft picks under contract due to no free agency and player movement, Chukc Noll was basically average at best as HC.

Noll also constantly tried to bench Bradshaw. Same with Tom Landry. Both were also aided by phenomenal GMs that stacked their rosters with players.

Don Shula went to a SB with every team he ever coached. He does not have quote as many others but he has the resume.

He's probably regarded as the best. Belichick's resume without Brady as his QB is pretty terrible.

Lombardi may have actually been the best though. I think he would have won with the Redskins had he not gotten sick and died.

Parcells is the best team builder. Maybe not the best technical coach. However he still qualifies as one of the best.

Parcells was the master motivator.

Players admitted they hated him but played hard for him.

Pound for pound, his Cowboy stretch, coaching and picking the players, is as good as there's been.
Belichick has the Super Bowls and eventually wins so he wins by default. Just happened he and Brady were the perfect match.
Reid is the best coach in the NFL currently and has a shot if he and Mahomes stick together long enough and go on a run. We've seen the Pats do it so we know it can be done.

Lombardi.

Took a team that went 1-10-1 to the Championship game two years later with mostly the same players.

Vince Lombardi

I saw him coach one game. It was when the Redskins played the Saints in Tulane Stadium.

John Madden has the highest NFL .759 winning percentage of the modern era.

To put that in perspective....

Vince Lombardi: .738
George Halas: .682
Bill Belichick: .662

Nick Saban: .14159 to infinity

DVOA, which is the best stat for measuring offense and defense because it isolates them and adjusts for strength of schedule, has Brady led offenses outranking Belichick’s defenses in 17/19 of his New England seasons. The only seasons the defense was ranked higher are 2003 and 2019.

Robinson and Duncan made slopovich, who stabbed bob hill in the back so he could coach that team. Two hall of famers tend to make a coach look good.
