We asked 50 experts, reporters and analysts to name the NFL's greatest player of all time at every position. The goal was to narrow the field to just one GOAT at quarterback, wide receiver, edge rusher, cornerback and even kicker. We're starting here with seven offensive positions, and defense and special teams will be unveiled on Wednesday.
After we tallied the ballots and crowned each offensive position's best player of all time, our voters weighed in and explained their decisions. Plus, Jeff Legwold broke down why each GOAT was chosen, and ESPN Stats & Information dove into the numbers to pick out key stats to know. Let's start at quarterback, which shouldn't surprise many.

Quarterback: Tom Brady
The runners-up
Joe Montana
Peyton Manning

Running back: Jim Brown

Barry Sanders
Walter Payton
Emmitt Smith

Wide receiver: Jerry Rice

I’d have Gonzalez over Gronkowski but not too many hot takes on that list

Gronk was an elite blocker, too. That's the difference between he and the rest of the TEs who have put up incredible numbers. He is the best to ever play the position.

Gonzalez’s receiving numbers dwarf every other TE by miles. His longevity trumps Gronkowski’s blocking in an era with less and less emphasis on the running game.

I'll take prime Gronk, you can have Tony Gonzalez, and we'll both be happy.

Justin Herbert should be the quarterback over Tom Brady. He can make all the throws.

Gronk had two votes more than Gonzalez, don't see how you can debate it wasn't one of those two.
Yet three voters chose Dikta, Newsome, Gates.

Gonzales invented the position
Gronk perfected it
Gronk perfected it

I want the special teams, if only to see who gets 2nd behind Ray Guy.
Guy was an all around talent but was so good at punting they didn’t want to risk him getting hurt.

Dwight Stephenson and Jim Otto both were better than Webster...if he was on any team minus the Steelers he would not be top 5..
My only other position where I think it could have went to someone else was John Hannah or Upshaw...but Larry Allen was a bad man..

I mean I personally wouldn’t put Peyton over sanders but it’s not really egregious either

Would take Joe Thomas or Forrest Gregg here.
Lombardi said Gregg was the best player he ever coached.

I mean I know it gets messy comparing eras and all, but he was 6’2 and less than 250 pounds during his playing career, so it’s hard for me to compare that to the athletic freaks of the past 20-40 years who were just as dominate with harder responsibilities than running the packers sweep 80 times a game

If they name the Pilejumper the greatest MLB, just burn ESPN down.

They chose Jim Brown as the best running back.

I would be curious to hear Bill Belichick’s 100% honest lineup based on players who have played since he began his career and critical explanations of why he would take Player A over Players B, C, D at each position.
One difference between Belichick and Saban is I think BB is much more of a historian of the game. He likes talking about NFL history. Unless it’s some information that can help win an upcoming game, Saban doesn’t give a shite what happened five minutes ago, much less thirty years ago.
