As soon as gambling was promoted in sports it opened up pandoras box. You want to put a little money on a game to make it interesting cool, but people are putting millions down and influencing these players / refs.

Do you really think this is something new?

What Rozier is being accused of is basically point shaving. That was going on in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, if not before. It's just that most guys who were participating in it weren't getting caught because the gambling was outside of any regulation. The only thing new is that it's easier to catch the players/coaches doing it.

Easy access to gambling, booze, and porn has been around for a while

Legalized instant gambling on your phone thru the use of a credit card is pretty damn new. The ramifications are still ramping up. The porn thing, while devastating, isn't ruining people financially.

Prop betting is the Las Vegas airport slot machine of gambling.

Am I the only person that views people rigging games and bets as part of the gambling process?

If I'm gambling on sports, I just assume it's a possibility that one of the players, refs, or coaches can go rogue and rig a game. It's all a part of the gamble.

Easy access?
Back in the day, if you weren't just betting in your circle of friends, you had to go to a barber shop or a pool hall, where you placed your bets in a back room with a guy who may or may not have given you his real name.

And in that process it is already ruining the experience for people who just like to watch sports because it is fun.

I can't really agree. I do believe the level of saturation is definitely new.

you're right, and sadly college football is as well. pay attention to the side where all the money is bet, the opposite side almost always wins

e.g. everyone is betting Cincinatti -4 this weekend, Baylor's going to cover

They certainly seem to go hand-in-hand among this young up-and-coming generation.

Forbes Sports did a break down of the revenue from Draft Kings and Fan Duel. Together, they made about $11 billion in revenue in 2024.

A WHOPPING 5% came from straight wagers; another 10% from Online Casinos (think black jack, poker, etc)

The Remaning 85%? Parlays. That number is fricking terrifying if you really sit and think about it.

And it’s predatory. We stopped cigarette ads because it was proven addictive and destructive but I hear and see ads everywhere “sign up today and receive $500 in free bets”. Might as well offer $500 in free heroin and tell them “always use your heroin responsibly”.

The problem is the players gambling. Not fans. The ad is for fans. What’s the problem?
