Kelly - What a prick.

As much as I don't like him, I agree with what he's doing in this case.

I'm absolutely fine with breaking the contract if the athlete can come up with the 1 mil (just my estimation of what it should be based on the recruitment of the player) buyout fee

You don't really think it costs a million to recruit one player, right?

Um, it is legit. When a coach walks away from his contract, he has breached the contract and has to pay a penalty, typically in the form of liquidated damages.

Lulz. So Kelley should get liquidated damages from the kid? And remind me again about the kid's salary.

so players should be able to sign LOI and go elsewhere if they change their mind with out sitting out or any other penalties?

I think my comment flew over your head. You said that since a coach can walk away from a contract, then a player should be able to walk away from a LOI.

The answer is that both actions have consequences. A coach would need to pay a breakage fee or liquidated damages. A player would need to sit out a year.

So, yeah, there are consequences to signing a contract.

Nothing flew over my head. The coach leaves for a better opportunity and the new employer pays the fee, assuming there is one. The player doesn't have that luxury. The coach doesn't have to sit out. And the penalty the coach may or may not have to pay is negotiated. Again, the player doesn't have the ability to negotiate his penalty. Not all contracts have a penalty.

Especially the sanctions. I read USC will have 69 scholarship players this year. That's crazy.

...and Kelly can do what he wants I suppose but to come out and say..."We're not releasing him but we wish him well."

WTF is that? That's a smarmy disingenuous a-hole attitude for a HC to have.

Have fun playing for nobody kid.

"Eddie Vanderdoes will not be attending the University of Notre Dame. We did not release him from his national letter of intent in order to protect the integrity of that very important program, but we have worked with the Vanderdoes family so that Eddie can continue his education this fall at a school closer to his home. We understand Eddie’s interest in remaining closer to his family and wish him well."

Perfect statement and great handling of the situation by BK.
