yeah...if you aren't going to release them...then just say it...sorry kid, we aren't releasing you.
If someone is falling off a bridge are you going to say..."I'm not going to reach out my hand buddy, but I wish you well."
Huh?
Saying, "we aren't releasing him but we wish him well" is smarmy double-talk...I'm taking all your money but you can buy anything in the store.

They can not release him because it presents a slippery slope for not only ND but for the rest of country.
Your issue is that he wished him well afterwards? Am I alive?

Wait what?
He signed a NLI. A binding contract.
Coaches and universities from around the country supported ND and told them to stick firm with this decision.
pls go.

and toss them to the side like yesterday's toilet paper.
you are what is wrong with college football today...they hypocrisy is out of control

Strong logic.
If you release a commit that just changes his mind then a signature on a LOI to your school officially means nothing.
National Signing Day would cease to exist as we know it.

Comparing a coaches breach of contract to a players =
Two big differences. One, athletes do not have to sign LOIs. Secondly, coaches have specific damage clauses if the contract is breached (obviously the institutions pick up the tab, but really that has nothing to do with a player who signs a LOI).

Horrible, horrible arguments.
Let's also ignore how much money these schools spend on recruiting top end athletes and how this can easily frick schools over because the school could have recruited another player.

Yes and they pay a penalty for that. This kid is being allowed to go to UCLA and practice, he just can't play this year, which is his penalty for backing out of the contract. Seems fair to me.

makes complete sense.
What was wrong with what BK did?
He could have pulled a Gundy and prevented a transfer to UCLA. He could have thrown a fit over his transfer. He didn't. He let him go. (Also, not that it makes a huge difference, but the "closer to home" thing is pretty big B.S. His hometown's more than 400 miles from UCLA. If it was really about being closer to home, he would have chosen Stanford or something. Kelly could have called him out on that, he didn't).
At the same time, he is also not allowing him to play this year, which is the absolute 100% correct thing to do. Doing otherwise sets an absolutely horrible precedent.
EV gets to go to the school of his choice. BK/ND prevents a horrible precedent from being set. Nothing wrong at all here.

they don't have to.
they don't have to spend money on weight rooms and training tables and giant fricking scoreboards.
that's a choice by these athletic departments.

right because being allowed to change your mind is a "horrible" precedent.
Of course at Notre Dame rape is okay...
BK is a great man

He signed a contract. He's allowed to change his mind ANY TIME AT NO PENALTY BEFORE NSD. Technically, even after NSD, since he doesn't have to sign that day, either. EV signed a contract with Notre Dame. He's not honoring it. He is still allowed to go to the school of his choice on a full-ride and all that comes with it. He just can't play one season. There's nothing wrong with that.
And yes, it does set a horrible precedent if you allow it to happen. Soon, any kid could sign with ND then think, "nope! I change my mind! Let me go!" That can't happen. It could really hurt the program in regards to recruiting and planning.
