Ecuador are reportedly set to be expelled from this year's World Cup over claims their defender Byron Castillo falsified his birth documents and is actually Colombian - which means he would have been ineligible for their qualifying campaign.
Chile claimed they had proof that Castillo was born in Tumaco, Colombia in 1995, and not in the Ecuadorean city of General Villamil Playas in 1998 as stated on his official documents. It claimed the Barcelona of Guayaquil full back used a false passport and birth certificate.
A new report from Mundo Deportivo claims FIFA has already made its decision to kick Ecuador out after concluding its probe into the allegations and an announcement will be made in the next few days.

I knew that would be the first response.
Also this means Italy could make it in now, if FIFA replaces Ecuador with the highest rank country not in the tournament.

Do they do that or just get the next team in COMNEBOL?

The article I read on it was very uninformed apparently.
I think Chile would get in most likely, it appears.
I'm not a Soccer expert I don't follow it at all.

Since they reported it, there must be some motivation.

Chile not in the discussion.
4 autos from conmebol and the 5th place team enters a playoff. Colombia finished 6th, Chile 7th.
Eta: actuaully they are going back and changing results for all matches he played. So looks like that does help Chile.

Incorrect as usual. Since the player played in both games vs Chile those results would be changed to 3-0 victories for Chile and would move them up to 4th place qualifying them for the World Cup

So Peru takes the Ecuador group spot and Chile plays Australia in the playoff for the final spot?
If so, there’s no way they’re playing that game as scheduled, right?
Eta: damn, they jump Peru as well, keeping the playoffs the same.
Can only imagine the hatred that Chile will feel from the fans in their World Cup qualifier in Ecuador in 2025/2026.

I certainly hope that this doesn't lead to any blood being spilled.
Given that, there's gonna be some frickin blood spilled over this shite
