Kevin Schnall Expected To Be Hired As South Carolina Baseball Head Coach
South Carolina’s search for a new baseball coach may have taken longer and stretched wider than initially expected, but the outcome is the one most anticipated all along: The Gamecocks are expected to hire Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall to lead the program.
Schnall arrives in Columbia with a brief but highly accomplished head coaching resume. In his first season at Coastal Carolina in 2025, he guided the Chanticleers to the national championship series and was named Baseball America Coach of the Year, becoming the first-ever first-time head coach to earn the honor. He also became just the fourth coach in NCAA history to take a team to the College World Series in his debut season and the only one to win his first game in Omaha. Coastal ultimately finished as national runner-up to LSU.

The yearly series vs Florida will be called the Roid Rage Classic.

Wasn't he also the the first head coach ejected from a College World Series Championship series?

South Carolina is about to be back

South Carolina is about to be back
Even if he is a decent coach, the SEC in baseball is beyond insane right now. I question if he’s going to figure it out and I question if USC is committed to baseball anymore. Because they’ve been lapped by damn near everyone over the last decade

Either way, it is certainly a much more inspiring hire than a washed up paul mainieri was

Guy got run in the decisive CWS game for being a meathead.
Good luck, South Carolina!

He got two warnings.

I mean it was lose and go home for them, and they lost, so…

Is there a college baseball coach that is not a douche bag?

Ehhh...
I mean I get the hire, coach in the area that led a mid-major to a CWS final, and I know he was on Gilmore's staff forever at CCU, but he hasn't shown the ability to build/sustain a program.
2025 was his first year as a head coach and then this year he goes 0-2 in a regional.

I mean it’s an upgrade from 2026 Pawl I guess.

Yeah, that hired made no sense even at the time.
This is one of those hires where the question is was CCU's success a significant byproduct of Schnall? Or was Schnall's success as a HC a byproduct of the strength of the CCU program?
If you are USC thought, assuming you weren't getting a guy with a lengthy history of success like Schlossnagle (Texas) or O'Connor (Miss. St), this is probably as good of a hire (on paper) as you could make. Since Tanner retired they tried the assistant coach promotion....that didn't work. They tried the up-and-comer at a lower level program with moderate success...that didn't work. They tried the old coach with prior championship bonafides that had grown stale at his prior job...with no success.

I think this is a very good hire by SCAR.
In no ways is success guaranteed but I don’t think they could’ve realistically made a better hire.
SCAR is too historically good of a program to be as down as they’ve been over the last decade and a half.
I think he’s the guy who can turn them around.
Yes, he’s no doubt a grade A asrehole.

quote:If USC is too good of a program to be down then you might as well include the rest of the conference because everyone can point to a few great years. USC is one of only 2 SEC schools that hasn’t made it to Omaha in the last 6 seasons. It’s not a mistake that their drought is now 15 seasons, nor is it a mistake that they spent the past 2 years in the cellar with Mizzou. USC fans won’t want to hear it but that’s closer to what USC baseball is, not the Tanner glory days

They had a relatively small window of excellence that isn’t going to be repeatable in this new landscape. Their sustainable ceiling is closer to middle of the pack.

This was my take too. 2 years of HC experience, in the Sun Belt, and now thrown into the SEC alone is scary. Great first year with a roster almost entirely from last coach and then this year 23 losses, didn't win the Sun Belt and 1-2 in a regional. Took a big step back in just year 2.
It's a gamble, a lot of red flags.
