Joe Jackson actively participated in the fixing of a championship series and there can be no forgiveness for that in any collegiate or professional sport ever.

Before people wave his meaningless .375 batting average in that World Series at me, compare his numbers for the games the White Sox were trying to win against those for the games they were trying to lose. They weren't trying to lose every game, they were trying to manipulate the betting line.

And look at the play by play of the games, the questionable defensive plays he made, like the triple he allowed to left field. Do you know how hard it is to triple to left field, especially in Crosley Field in Cincinnati that had a short left field?

And regardless of the jury nullification that was simply fans wanting their bread and circuses, the guy admitted it to his wife and showed her the damn money.

And he wasn't a moron taken advantage of by people as folks looking at it through a 21st century prism try to claim. He simply couldn't read or write which was not uncommon in the rural South in that era and even later.

For the NASCAR fans, two prominent names from fairly recently, Morgan Shepherd and Jake Elder are and were (since Jake's gone) illiterate. They did all right. As did Joe Jackson, dude ran three successful businesses (restaurant, laundry, liquor store) and died with a nice house and money in the bank.

And Pete Rose is just a dumb jock who could've made this go away after one year ... one year ... if he'd simply admitted from the start that he'd been betting on baseball, but he didn't because thinking like a dumb jock his ego wouldn't let him do it, plus he thought he could beat this like taking an extra base and sliding headfirst.

Besides, doing the 16-year-old back in the 1970s will keep him out of the HoF regardless. It's irrelevant that she made out to be older, it's on the man to make sure.

And I'm an Ohtani fan but if he was gambling illegally, throw the book at him. I don't care about MLB's deals with gambling, it wouldn't matter if they set up slot machines and baccarat tables at the entrance to every stadium, players, managers, coaches and team employees can't bet on baseball or make bets with bookies on any sport, period, the end.

4.5 million dollars going out in 500,000-dollar increments since 2017. That is a lot of money over a long period to be so deaf and blind.

Maybe the FBI will be able to jog his memory.

I believe that he gave his friend the money, but wasn’t involved in the actual betting.

He says he had zero clue that his money was missing… I find that hard to believe. I doubt he would get in trouble by just paying it off.

The irony of Astros fans in here throwing stones over something that doesn't even impact the on-field product is exceedingly funny.

That the guy who has finished no worse than 2nd in MVP voting (and top 5 in Cy Young the one year in the past 3 he finished 2nd for the MVP) the past three years isn't throwing games?

Yeah, I'm sure.

Were Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson bad at baseball?

Should be in the Hall, theres no proof he ever threw games or bet against his own team.... just like Shohei

Shoeless Joe Jackson

That case is debatable. He played well during the Black Sox WS but also was supposedly really slow to field balls and an unusual number of triples were hit his way in that series.

Again, if actual evidence comes out that Shohei won 2 MVPs, almost 3 in a row, while also fixing games then he might be the greatest player ever

Anyone who Believes this BS story by Otahni is naive af and doesn't understand how gambling works. This interpreter guy might make a hundred fifty grand per year. Let's be generous and say he makes 250 grand. No way in he'll does he have the money to bet millions of dollars. No bookie is gonna let someone with that small of an income get millions deep without a confirmation of backing. No doubt the bookie saved the receipts as an ace in the hole delivering Ohtani if he himself got popped.

Do I believe Shohei when his camp had 3 different stories within 30 minutes of the initial news article?

Last week he was quoted saying that he paid off the translator's debt in 500k increments; this week, he says he never paid any debts.

Are you telling me banks don't ask for ID or signatures on this large of transactions?

He's lying his arse off.

This would be huge. Pete Rose was finished with his career when he got caught gambling. Ohtani is the best player in the world and in his prime. Theres no way he'd get banned like Rose.

Again, compare Jackson’s hitting in the games they were trying to lose vs. the games they were trying to win. It will be very enlightening.

Plus he showed his wife the damn money.

The deal with that White Sox team, it was tremendously talented but it was also tremendously polarized into two camps, upright All-American college types like Kerr, Schalk and Collins vs. poor hicks from the sticks and the inner city and the wrong side of the tracks like most of the culprits. And they hated each other’s guts with a passion.

It’s also a bald-faced lie that Charles Comiskey was cheap … they had one of the highest payrolls in the league … or that Cicotte was held out to keep him from winning 30 and getting a bonus.

What happened is that Chick Gandil, who was an absolute lowlife and ready to retire, cooked this up and enlisted the others who signed on out of sheer greed. The end.
