Agreed but if Watson sits out you have neither.
He would literally be the dumbest human of all time. He has no play here

I dont want the NFL turning into the NBA where players just choose completely where and when they want to play
Yep. This could be a tipping point not just for Houston, but the NFL as a whole. The NBA seems to become a more pathetic product by the day. But the players essentially run the league and the stars demanding to team up on 4-5 big franchises is bad for the product as a whole.
The Texans have ALL of the leverage here. Trade him if another team is willing to give you a HUGE haul for him, but otherwise, sit tight and make him "retire" (he won't)

The Texans have been searching for their franchise QB since their inception in 2002. They finally nailed it in the draft and found their guy, and now he wants out after his 3rd full season.
And after just 1 bad season. They were 10-6 and 11-5 the two previous seasons. It’s not like they’ve been the Bengals.
They are a disaster of a franchise at the moment. If you don’t think so you haven’t been paying attention

Bill O'Brien purged a lot of talent from that team. Miami should be on the phone working on a deal to bring Watson into their franchise which includes 1st rd picks and Tua.

Watson has no leverage
He would have to sit out 3 years, lose a 110 million, and come out the other side as a 28 year old QB who hasnt played in 3 years

It would be pretty impossible given the current CBA construction to have player movement like the NBA so I don’t think collusion is necessary to preserve the league quite yet
Let’s not act like this is a decision made over night, he let a lot of shite go since he’s been there and it’s pretty clear they are completely dysfunctional and will harm his career the longer he stays there.
It’s not like Lebron telling teams to make moves to ruin their future then bolting for a city with a beach, this is more akin to Kevin Garnett finally getting out of the black hole in Minnesota (probably better examples)
That being said if I’m the Texans I probably just call his bluff, because the cards are massively stacked against Watson if they do.

Or he shows up and makes life miserable for everyone. Either way it’s not a good scenario for the Texans. Unless a bunch of teams start hiring team chaplains as GMs I don’t see this starting some NBA wave.
Stars always dictated the league powers in the NBA, they just hadn’t teamed up in the past. It’s the nature of basketball as a sport. Football is different

I got an idea. Call his bluff. Don’t trade him.
He just signed a 4 year contract extension. Now that he secured the bag he’s gonna request a trade?
This is a real option for Houston. It's why his price tag is going to be so high.

It’s bullshite. It’s not like he’s a vet with 10 years in and he wants to go somewhere and win.

The Texans won't be able to field a competitive team before 2026 unless they are able to trade him for a king's ransom.
The history of the NFL has proven this is false. Teams making good decisions with good coaching can turn it around very quickly.

It was a massive underpay relative to his value so I agree regardless of the organizational dysfunction but it’s a bit hard to tell a guy with a history of knee injuries to not take the first pay day and the issue is that the Texans offered him a ton of things in that process that they never followed through on, so it’s easy to see where he felt lied to or conned into that deal.
At the end of the day it just comes down to leverage. Watsons main leverage is the PR of a public trade request. It’s not much but it may be enough for a team whose probably tired of being the laughing stock of the league for 2 plus years

Here's the thing, I want his feet to be held to the fire and be forced to play in Houston. I don't want the NFL to turn into the NBA.
But that's not the most efficient move and certainly doesn't recognize the cudgel of him crying "slavery" and the pundits decrying the hypocrisy of how Watson is forced to honor a contract while the team could just cut or trade him.
We'll see if the Texans have the guts to face the fire.

Texans have brought this on themselves with their utter incompetence and in insistence of letting a freaking chaplin dictate the dealings of the team.
Don’t expect them to get many free agents as long as Esterby is there. I don’t blame DrShaun because they are making the Bungles and Browns during their horrid stretch look well run NFL franchises.
You can’t make up the kind of stupidity that Cal McNair has brought.
