Has there ever been a successful mid-game opening or closing of a retractable roof?

I have been to two MLB baseball games where this happened:

1. First year of Minute Maid Park in Houston (back when it was Enron Field), they opened the roof during the 7th inning.

2. First year of T-Mobile Park in Seattle (back when it was Safeco Park), it started to drizzle/sprinkle and they closed the roof around the 6th inning.

This really sucks. Games look so nice on TV in open stadiums especially at Denver. These closed or retractable stadiums just don't have the same attractive 'look" when watching the games. The NFL just keeps getting more unlikable.

Stadium timeline based on the defending time between stadiums

54 years, (1948-2002): Mile High Stadium
28 years, (2003-2031): Empower Field at Mile High
14 years, (2032-2045): Dome Stadium
7 years, (2046-2052): new outdoor stadium
3 years, (2053-2055): mix use stadium

I guess stadiums are good for 25-30 years. If the taxpayers aren’t paying for it, it’s all good.

I don’t think there’s a single retractable roof stadium open the majority of the time. Even Indy is only open like 25% of the time. Houston/Atlanta/Arizona/Dallas are basically always closed, as are all the baseball ones.

Yep. It always starts with “we’re going to keep it open most of the time.” The Texans even did it in the early part of the season the first year (until people started passing out). Then they go with the “50/80” rule where if it’s within those temps and no rain, they keep it open. And then they eventually phase that out and keep it closed all the time. I’ve seen days here in Houston in the upper 60s and sunny and the roof is still closed. From everything I’ve read, it’s the players that want the roofs closed and especially in baseball.

Now it won't just be drunken residents fighting in the front yards of the Mexican neighborhood next to the new stadiums, drunken Broncos fans will be taking part in the festivities too.

(I lived close to Mile High for a year and twice I had drunken fans fighting in my yard)

Sitting in climate controlled is much better for comfort.

in other words they want a Super Bowl

The issue with this is we have more and more stadiums that are better and good for February. At some point getting a Super Bowl every 20 years seems like a poor ROI?

If you can play on natural grass with climate control, I don’t see the issue here

It is a poor investment. They can get in line with Cleveland, Nashville, and Chicago for SB bidding.

Well, they will also be able to hold a lot more concerts and conventions and stuff.

After these does anyone know what the count will be (dome vs open air)?

Dome/retractable:
Arizona
LA Chargers
LA Rams
Indianapolis
Dallas
Atlanta
Detroit
Las Vegas
New Orleans
Houston
Minnesota

Open:
Chicago
Cincinnati
Buffalo
Denver
Cleveland
Tampa Bay
Kansas City
Miami
Philadelphia
San Francisco
NY Giants
NY Jets
Jacksonville
Green Bay
Carolina
New England
Baltimore
Washington
Seattle
Pittsburgh
Tennessee

Of outdoor teams…Cleveland, Tennessee, Chicago, and now Denver are proceeding with domed venues. Washington is also gearing up for a new stadium. I’m sure Carolina ownership is ready for one too.
