Not in my opinion. He used the fame he got from the death of his supposed girlfriend to become the human interest story of the year. It was his fame, and his fame alone, that won him all those awards and almost secured him the Heisman Trophy.
I still have problems with this guy's story though. He completely contradicted the timeline that the Notre Dame athletic department set up in the press conference on Wednesday night.

There's no way a chick talked to him for 8 hours every night. At best he was catfished but he didn't take the "relationship" seriously until she "died". At that point he milked it then lied when he found out she was still alive. That's what the unnamed ND players said.

ESPN "confirming" no transactions took place does nothing for me. I am just looking at it from the roniah angle. When people take that much time and energy to fool someone online, there is usually a motive......money.

I really don't have an opinion on the matter and pretty much just waiting for more facts to come out (which may never happen). I'm leaning towards the "he got duped, found out later on then was too embarrassed to admit so kept lying and embellishing it" theory.

Then those that believe he was in on it from the beginning, because as a college athlete going to be drafted in the NFL, people might start asking questions as to why you never attend any event, or are seen in public with a girl. Create a fictitious gf, quash the questions. Ego lets you build it up much bigger with the whole dying bit, gets a shitload of sympathy votes for awards, etc. Then kill her off, quietly before you move to the NFL.

I don't know why you are trying to make this a Catholic vs. Protestant thing. I'm a practicing Catholic and I have quite a few problems with Te'o's story.

but what exactlly would any of us have done? I've never gotten duped to this extent (and yes I know no one on this board has ever been duped) not sure anyone in the world has
so it's nice to think that once he knows he's been made a fool of to "just come clean" but humans do not work that way
