Even if you believe he was duped by Tuiasosopo, how does that make Te'o a victim? Because he'd be embarrassed? Lost time talking to someone on the phone? I still haven't seen what damages were done to Te'o when you consider that the elaborate, completely fabricated stories about his relationship all came out of Te'o's mouth.

Teo is no saint and is not a full-fledged victim.
But, I don't think for a nanosecond that he concocted this whole fake girlfriend story. It is FAR more likely that the weasel Ronniah (or whatever his name is) concocted it, embarrassed Teo immensely, and Teo decided to make white lies about it (even after he knew he was duped) instead of coming clean that he was duped.
If I were in the situation, I do think it would be extremely hard to come out and admit (1) the girlfriend was of the online variety, (2) I had embellished on how meaningful the relationship was, and (3) I was duped like a mofo. And he would have had to do that to the entire country. He probably rolled the dice and hoped nothing would come of it.
It's still his fault he was so incredibly gullible. And yes, he is a liar for not coming clean and continuing to answer questions.
Of course, I've lied about worse than having a fake girlfriend.

I think he found out much earlier than Dec. 6, And the exaggerated stories he told about her were much more than 'white lies.' He got a ton of attention from the media over his 'struggles' with the GF and grandmother dying on the same day...and he seemed to enjoy the attention. I honestly don't think the lies were due to embarrassment at one point, they were self serving because he enjoyed the spotlight.
