He can totally overcome this if he's a good enough football player. Being serious.

I must admit: I admire Te'o for his lying prowess. He was able to spin an inconceivable story on the fly for months, without getting caught. That takes a lot of nerve, and a lot of creativity.

Like Costanza, just better at sports. (I didn't say good)

Wasn't 100% sure Teo was in on it until I read that Pete Thammel interview. I am now.

Three main desires drive people: money, power, fame.

Teo obviously likes the attention.

Wow. Stereotype much? That was one tweet. I think the majority up there -- or at least a big enough minority to be noticeable -- have a good grasp on this. The kid from ND who wrote for The Big Lead and was on OTL was a good example.

Which he's not.

He got duped, exaggerated as more and more media attention came in (or exaggerated b/c he was embarrassed to admit it was an online thing), and then found out. Maybe he tried to cover it up, maybe he didn't. I'd guess he did.

This is where I'm at. I can't quite get onboard with the idea that he fabricated it all in concert with the other guy from the beginning, but I do think he fluffed it out and lied on the fly to make his relationship sound more credible.

I still don't think that transcript proves that he was in on it from the get go.

I still think one of two things happened:

He got duped, exaggerated as more and more media attention came in (or exaggerated b/c he was embarrassed to admit it was an online thing), and then found out. Maybe he tried to cover it up, maybe he didn't. I'd guess he did.

Remember: this guy is Mormon, a religion that requires a lot of faith and suspension of belief to adhere to. It's not like he couldn't suspend belief for some of the outrageous stuff.

I just don't buy that he was in on it from the start. The risk/reward there does not compute from the start, nor does the risk/reward for ND to completely back him.

I'm with you there.

But I am certainly suspicious of his "friend". VB has shown that he tweeted Manti in November and was also his guest at the Stanford game apparently? This friend is also supposedly the guy that got the picture from the girl that was used correct?

If this guy was the one that "set" him up then why would have invite him to the Stanford game?

That sticks out to me the most.

I'm still leaning that he didn't know at first, was catfished, but ran with it (including all those lies in the SI transcript).

Manti Te'0 took us all on a trip to his place in the Hamptons to meet his two horses, Snoopy and Prickly Pete!

The only thing we do know is that he is a liar and nothing he says can be trusted

He is not as devout as the media has led you to believe according to this.

Yet, even before the Michigan State game, Manti Te’o was being questioned by his teammates. Apparently Manti had only “seen” Lennay once — but I assume “seen” was a rather loose term used for “chatted with online” (however, this is extremely complicated to understand since they were reportedly talking since 2009, according to the Te’o family). The debate among teammates wasn’t whether or not Manti actually knew this girl — it was clear that they had been in contact; no, players just didn’t think that it was fair to call Lennay Kekua Manti’s girlfriend, period (it is well-known on campus that he has had relations with other girls during his time at Notre Dame). They recognized what was going on for what it was — a terrible publicity stunt used to fuel Manti Te’o's Heisman campaign. In fact, many of the players privately commented that they didn’t want the students to wear leis in support of Manti and wouldn’t participate themselves — they cited that the team never responded so publicly to tragic events for other players. But there was also the feeling that Manti didn’t deserve to benefit from publicity from the death of somebody he barely knew.

Read the whole deadspin article. Then read that transcript.

You won't have any doubts.

Yep. I think he was either embarrassed about meeting her online (something Thamel said he believed when he asked how they met and Manti was indirect), wanted the attention, or both.

Idc if he had secks. That same kid said he was always in mass, like all the time. There is an element of the devout about him, regardless of his sex life (or lack thereof; that bolded sentence is pure speculation).

I have.

The transcript is meaningless to me because in each of my follwing questions he was already lying at that point. Its clearly a lie. I just want to know when the lying (Manti Teo lying that is) actually started. Was it before or after the death of this girl? Was he catfished, embarrassed, and then saw how the narrative could help him? Or was there no catfishing and he was in on it from the onset?

I did.

And I do.

The most rational explanation I can come up with is the one I've outlined so far.

I could be totally wrong, and there could be no rational explanation. I'm just trying to base an argument on reason.

If he was in on it (actually, almost either way), he is going to have to be one of the most mentally tough people ever for the stuff he's going to have to hear and put up with.

You usually have to be focused to be a great player (unless you're an athletic freak like LT that can do 40 lines of coke and bang 13 hookers from 6 am - 11:59 am and then run out there seeing at 12 pm seeing 13 Qbs and actually getting 3 & 1/2 sacks on the real QB each week...
