re: Deadspin: Manti Te'o Dead Girlfriend Story a Hoax (now with drug dealers!)

All right, I may be changing my belief on what I think happened.
I have felt for nearly 24 hours now that this entire farce was a "gay beard".
Now I think that Te'O was actually fooled. He possibly believed the story the entire time. HOWEVER, he greatly exaggerated his relationship with the girl. He used this sob story to pump up his popularity and sold his sob story to every reporter that put a microphone in front of his face. Instead of this being some girl he knew from the internet, this became "the love of his life" that he "talked to on the phone for hours before falling asleep every night for four months."

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo is essentially the Joker it seems.
He had some chick troll Te'o for months, investing a ton of time and energy.
He also set up duping the AZ Cardindals LB'er, introducing him to a fake Lennay?
Some men just want to see the world burn.

the Carson Tinker story did not get near the attention it should have in the national media.
Carson might of wanted it that way. Just saying.

if there was significant possibility of this going to a civil or criminal trial.
For what? Who lost money, was defamed, or injured to cause any kind of court proceedings. The only thing possible would be if this naive chump was sending money, jewelry or gifts to his "girlfriend" and wanted to pursue damages. I'm going to go out on a limb, supported by concrete and steel, and say he's not even that fricking stupid.

Yep...and the Carson Tinker story did not get near the attention it should have in the national media. He was severely maimed in the same incident and overcame tremendous amounts of physical and mental adversity to play football in the fall.
Carson Tinker
Carson Tinker
Carson Tinker
I saw that fricking Carson Tinker story 8 times. It stopped illiciting pity and more annoyance after the 4th time.
....the Tinker story didn't get national attention

Their first "connection" on the internet wasn't until October 10, 2011. Even though Manti claims they met in Novermber 2009.
quote:
Nov. 28, 2009: Te'o and Kekua meet after Stanford's 45-38 victory over Notre Dame in Palo Alto, according to the South Bend Tribune: "Their stares got pleasantly tangled, then Manti Te'o extended his hand to the stranger with a warm smile and soulful eyes." Kekua, a Stanford student, swaps phone numbers with Te'o.
So "they" swapped phone #s in 2009 not internet information. Either way none of this even comes close to proving that Te'o made the entire thing up.

This is where I am, but I don't think it was for Heisman purposes. Pure attention whoring.

Well of course there is no significant possibility of this (no criminal act. No civil cause of action). I'm just saying IF there was.

Did you read the deadspin article?

I'm not trying to get into a dick measuring contest, and I could be wrong about this, but I don't believe Carson Tinker's story was on the cover of SI. I don't believe it was plastered all over ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc. The only time I ever heard it talked about was when Tom Rinaldi did his fluff pieces on Gameday last year.

Not reading through this whole thread, but check out this Chuck Klosterman quote from Grantland....think it's pretty poignant.

what is there to be angry about? If we don't classify Te'o as the victim, there's no victim at all. I suppose some people might feel "betrayed" for having been tricked into caring about Te'o's unreal romantic hardship, but that doesn't make much sense; the public's intangible, mediated relationship with Te'o isn't that different than Te'o's intangible, mediated relationship with a woman who wasn't there at all.

I admit that I haven't being following this that closely and this might have been covered, but if Manti was in on the hoax-
Why did he go to Notre Dame and tell them, she didn't exist after Christmas?

I could possible buy this.

That's what I am thinking. He was fooled. When he found out is completely up in the air. Did he find out before or after the "death"? Who knows. But no matter when he found out he already made his bed and didn't want to deal with the embarrassment.
Doesn't quite explain him continuing the charade after Dec 6th, but maybe he still wanted to keep it going and couldn't tell the truth.

Eh, Te'o used this story to try and win CFB's most prized award.
