Music to the ears of the DAT. The high strikeout rates have been really frustrating to watch

Interesting comment of the day

So much has been made about the need for a front line starter, but when you look at the Astros model, having one of the great bullpens of the last half decade last season coming back in full, and, obviously, the clear preference this offseason for contact oriented hitters, it’s hard not to get a Royals-y vibe from the team, which is even further reinforced by the fact that the Astros were 2nd in DRS last year, also a Royals hallmark. Who knows if this type of team was the objective from the get-go, but the similarities are pretty undeniable

Last year’s six struck out a combined 27% of the time. This year’s replacement six are projected to strike out just 16% of the time. Jason Castro is gone, replaced by Brian McCann. Colby Rasmus and Carlos Gomez are gone, replaced by Josh Reddick and Nori Aoki. Carlos Beltran isn’t particularly strikeout-prone, and he’ll bat most days. Alex Bregman has an excellent minor-league record of contact. We know the least about Yulieski Gurriel, but in last year’s cup of coffee, he whiffed just a dozen times in 137 trips.
FAP.
The bottom of last year's lineup was just dreadful. Colby, Castro, Gomez, Jake. We should have a solid to above average lineup top to bottom.

The problem is if Devo is moved to the rotation what that does to the pen. I think the pen is good but I don't buy it's dominant on the level of that Royals bullpen
On the flip side this team is a lot more explosive offensively than that KC team

I think Gregerson/Harris/Giles has shown the potential to be like that Herrera/Davis/Holland trio the Royals had. They just seemingly can never all be on fire. One of Giles or Greg will have a shite 10 day span while the other is lights out, and then they rotate
Very interested to see how Feliz plays out. He was fricking great for a large portion of last year but if I recall correctly was starting to get hit pretty hard towards the end of the season. Hoping that's all youth and inexperience though

Don't think it is much of a problem. More than likely Fiers takes Devo's place in the BP as long term relief if Devo makes the rotation. Sipp is still LOOGY (he cant be any worse than last season, hopefully). Feliz returns and Hoyt is in the BP out of Spring this season, so one of them will take Neshek's roll. Then Harris, Gregerson & Giles are still the back three. So the pen will have no one new other than Fiers & Devo swapping out I would think.

Yeah, me too. If Feliz can catch more of the black he could be a force for us. It looked like he lost focus at times and caught too much of the plate. It doesnt' matter how good your stuff is if you throw it over the heart of the plate. Hopefully he takes that next step forward.

Our old pal Chris Carter is having a tough time finding a job. After hitting 41 home runs (tying for the NL lead) the Brewers non tendered him and now his agent is discussing the possibility of him playing in Japan.
It's interesting how the market for a guy like him had dwindled in recent years when a few years back, there was seemingly a bunch of guys hitting .230 with 35 homers.

Health is the key.
We should be better by default...just by having a healthy LMJ and Keuchel.
If Jabroni can give us consistent solid starts, that will be enough to get us to the deadline.
And Feliz and Sipp should be better. If Giles finds his groove, this pitching staff could be lights out

Injuries are inevitable though. I wanna say at some point late in the summer we technically had the least injured team by some metric
I don't think we'll ever see 2015 Keuchel again but he should definitely be an improvement over last year which will help a lot. Expanding a little more on "health is the key"....I feel like saying the health of LMJ is the most important thing. Losing him or Keuchel hurts us significantly worse than any other pitcher. I keep forgetting we signed Charlie Morton too

Astros plan to use Cardinal bounty to add starting pitcher

the Cardinals were forced to surrender their top two picks in the June draft to the Astros, along with $2 million. Suddenly, with a surplus of draft picks, the pain of giving up top prospects for Quintana or someone else could be eased.
This is what I suggested right after the decision. Like Listy said, though, I'll believe it when I see it.

Astros and Will Harris agree to 2-year deal
quote:
He’ll receive a $5MM guarantee ($2.2MM in 2017 and $2.8MM in 2018) in the pact, which also gives Houston a club option for the 2019 campaign. The value of the option will be determined by how many games Harris finishes in the 2018 season, with a range of between $5.5MM and $8.5MM.

2015 Keuchel and Giles would be pretty sweet

I finally found an update on the In-market streaming deal that was supposed to go into place before the 2017 season:
for those of you without ROOT, make nice with someone who has it and borrow their login credentials. My confidence is low that the MLB.tv through unlocator method will last another season.
For those of you who already have the channel, you'll have the added benefit of streaming games away from home.

After the MLB owners’ meetings Friday, commissioner Rob Manfred said an agreement was in place for NESN to stream Red Sox games, and another deal was on the way with ROOT Sports, which airs the Mariners, Rockies, Astros and Pirates. Barring hiccups, fans who subscribe to those channels should be able to stream games live online from anyway beginning with the 2017 season.
