I was having a conversation with someone yesterday and I thought it was interesting scenario:
Sign Machado to 7 years with 2 player options. Opt-out clause in year 3.
Trade Correa for a #2 started that has relatively longish team control with lots of upside.
Trade some talents/skills not named Whitley or Tucker for Realmuto, who agrees to a 5 yr deal.
So, two things --
1) What would be the reaction from the fan-base?
and more importantly (unless you're AstroBaw)...
2) What would this do to the short-term and long-terms of the team? Would it make them a WS favorite? Would it disrupt team chemistry negatively?

I've said all along that Correa is likely odd man out when looking long term at the roster, but adding Machado w/o long term investment outside of Altuve doesn't make sense to me, because Correa can produce those numbers and add value to a future deal.
I do get your line of thinking though.
I'm holding out hope that we get Bumgarner at deadline.

Not terribly important, but the scenario I posed was not mine. It was posed by my neighbor, who keeps insisting that the Astros are still the leader for Realmuto.

We haven't talked about him much this off season but I'm seeing a lot of people talking about Josh James. I'm pretty excited to see what he'll do this season. I've seen him predicted as AL Rookie of the Year and Buster Olney has him as a dark horse All Star candidate.

At least we have acknowledged that we have settled

I hope they make a performance shirt with the new slogan this year.

Phillies went completely stupid and threw in Sixto... only way to beat their offer was to include Whitley. I’m glad Luhnow doesn’t make emotional trades. Phillies gave up way too much for Realmuto.

No doubt, even if Realmuto goes 25/100 and throws out 50%, would not give up Whitley.
Tucker though would have been a different story.

Well, we're not winning a championship with our current roster of catchers.....

I’m certainly not in love with our catchers and on record with that at the same time the position is EXTREMELY weak and really the only standouts are posey who’s about to have to move off the position and Realmuto and I’m not sure the price for 120 games of Realmuto should be payed and think the phils overpaid. Could make a much cheaper move and get cervelli.
Essentially a long way to say the two non mediocre catchers in the league are with the giants and Phillies who aren’t winning the WS. Whoever wins the WS will do so with a mediocre backstop

Maybe, but I bet they don’t also also have a light hitting left fielder, right fielder and DH. We needed Realmuto. This team needs another big bat. Period.

The Astros are not a playoff team with the current roster. Mark these words

It's February 10th and Dallas Keuchel doesn't have a job. Any thoughts on bringing him back? I think his contract demands will have been lowered since the beginning of the off season. The Wade Miley move would seem to signify we're out on Keuchel.
I'm somewhat torn on Keuchel. You'd probably have to assume 3-4 years and a minimum of $70 million (Rick Porcello got 4/82). If we bring him back, who's out? Josh James? Obviously hes unproven compared to Keuchel but I'm higher on James potential.
Keuchel is known commodity. Hes projected at 200 innings and mid to high 3 ERA. Behind JV and Cole, he'll be an above average innings eater. The thing I most consider is the rotation beyond this year... JV is a free agent, Cole is a free agent (and likely the most sought after pitcher on the market), McHugh is a free agent. Is it worth the price to lock in an above average pitcher ahead of a potential rotation decimation in 2020?

Do something unique, offer him essentially 4-year deal but an opt out after a year. Would help the Stros and if he has a strong season he can opt out and try FA again.

Luhnow pretty much big sayonara to Keuchel, Marwin, and Gattis a few days ago, wishing them good luck and thanking them for their contributions.
