Obviously a salary move, but let’s see what we do with it

So, does the full $14 M still become available for cap purposes?

Bregman will end up getting an extra year, but will have lots of deferred money.

KC is to Buffalo what the Astros are to the Yankees. Somebody will have to knock their daddy out of the playoffs for them before they'll ever make the super bowl.

So they got like $4.5 mil below the CBT?

That ain’t much for an outfielder. Watch em not do a damn thing.

The Chicago Cubs will pay $8.5 million of Ryan Pressly’s
$14 million contract and give up Class A pitcher Juan Bello

Wow! the Stros really wanted to get rid of this guy! Does not instill much confidence as a Cub fan about this guy.

My in-laws are passionate Astro fans and my sister-in-law hates Pressley. She went to a game on his bobblehead day and refused the free bobble head upon entry to the game!

Think it's a mix of the Astros really liking some other guys to take on those leverage spots that he was going to be asked to get and a lot of the metrics don't instill confidence that he could bounce back to his old self. Lost a lot of swing and miss and command from 2023 to 2024.

I still think he can get big time outs in the MLB, maybe the extra month of rest will help him a little bit next year. Definitely very thankful for everything he did for the Astros and how dominant he was in the postseason up until 2024.

I thought I read a stat where his ERA was 1.99 over his last 32 appearances, does that sound right?

He was pretty damn good whenever the Astros were starting to climb out of the cellar from May through July but kind of regressed again towards the end of the season and nothing ever felt easy when he was out there.

He was always good for one or two just massive blowups, like most good relievers, in previous years that would put a bad taste in your mouth but in 2024 it just felt more like death by 1,000 paper cuts. Walking the nine hole hitter, can't put away a guy who ends up getting a hit etc. The weirdest part about it was he'd cough it up early in the inning so the game would be tied then he'd settle in and get out if it without the team trailing.

Pressly's final appearance as an Astro sums up all of last years frustrations with him

Strikeout
Single
Single
Spiked curve wild pitch to tie the game
Strikeout
Walk

Didn't finish the inning. Dude was a traffic cop all year long. Constantly putting way too many guys on base.

Of course it didn't help that our $19M a-hole followed him up, immediately walked his first guy on 4 pitches and then unloaded the bases.

Both of these damn guys...

His stuff backed up enough the last two years (it really showed last season) to where he just couldn’t induce chases on the slider out of the zone or finish hitters off like used to. He ended up nibbling a ton, in a lot of three ball counts and having to use his fastball more than you want.

I hated giving Hader that deal but I will say that the thought process was correct. They needed another higher leverage relief arm alongside Abreu. It just didn’t need to be a massive deal for the flashiest name on the market

It's wild that this time last year, we expected to have such a lock down bullpen between Abreu, Pressly and Hader. And ultimately our season ended because Pressly and Hader couldn't lock down a 1 run lead without unraveling.

Yeah it’s just brutal when you look at how much we paid Pressly/Hader last year

I hope we can get at least one high end year out of that Hader deal. I don’t think his stuff had regressed or anything last year like Pressly’s had, he’s just volatile and so are relievers in general

Hmmmmm if no one else has come to Alex with a 6 year deal I'm not sure what the Astros should or could do here.

Add an extra year.

First 2 years of salary are deferred, to be spread out so long that Knox will be buying his grandkids birthday presents with the payments.
