I think most of these deals are made knowing the tail-end is wasted and overpaid. On paper, the deal for Xander is 11/$280, but really the owner is thinking 6/$280... but they don't want to take the huge cap/tax hit of paying him $47million per year.

Absolutely.
The general rule of thumb is that 1 WAR is worth $8M on average. So Judge at $360M needs to produce 45 WAR for that deal to "break even" and he was over 10 WAR last season.
Of course the savvy teams find ways to get value for a lot cheaper.

Also these big market teams are confident they will have big revenue in perpetuity. The luxury tax is not penal enough and they know it. 75% of teams are already eliminated and MLB is fine with that.

According to azcentral sports, the Astros are among the teams checking in with the Arizona Diamondbacks about the availability of their outfielders. Those outfielders include Daulton Varsho, Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy

McCarthy is the most attainable and seems like the one that fits the best for us value wise. I’m guessing Varsho and Carroll are just not available unless something crazy is thrown on the table

It would take Hunter Brown... but if we could sign Bassitt and trade Brown for Carroll I would think about it.

I mentioned Alek Thomas before the deadline. Fits as the lefty platoon outfielder who can play CF. I'd assume he'd be the cheapest in a trade.

He struggled last year but was still a big time prospect. Also 3 years younger than McCarthy. They are probably pretty close to each other value wise

I can see that with the age difference evening it out.

I know Carroll’s mom
That’s all I got. LOL

Brandon Nimmo getting 8 years/$162MM from Mets. Congrats. I guess.

So we’re getting no one else of any consequence.

Brantley, baw. Mr. Professional Hitter.

Abreu is a big deal
If Brantley comes back before the playoffs, it might be unanswered prayers

all the crazy deals , all the long-term huge numbers
and if the Astros get a C /CF it could be the best off season for the Astros compared both to the MLB and Club history
