Fair enough. I guess I’m not quite as worried about his fastball losing velocity because I would think we would encourage a higher changeup percentage vs his slider being the primary off speed pitch.

This is an honest question - how confident are you that Framber will stay with Houston? 75% or more?

If so, I think I would agree with you that Rodon is a pass. If it’s lower than that, I think it’s worth taking a swing at Rodon. At least he is available and we can get possibly 3 good years out of him at a reasonable price.

Framber’s not going anywhere

He’s happy where he’s at, and his mental well being is the most important factor

He’ll get an Alvarez type of deal for probably 5 years

Not injury prone and as consistent as they come

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying about passing on Rodon, or your reasoning.

I think I just may be a bit more nervous than you about going into the season without another good arm. I know Brown has potential to factor into the rotation at some point, but I still think the effects of the bullshite lost draft picks are not entirely behind us. I would feel better with another top-tier arm in the rotation until the farm system can catch back up.

The thought of potentially being able to grab someone like Rodon, while passing on over-priced agents like Verlander and de Grom, seems like the prudent move.

Valdez
Javier
Urquidy
Garcia
LMJ
Brown

We can eat a lot of innings and feel really good about the pitcher that shakes out after Framber and Cristian for a playoff series

Saw where Pressly is pitching in the WBC. Not sure how I feel about that

Plus we get the AARP version of rookie Forrest Whitley.

I've said all along that 3 years is thing JV is after. I think he'd take 3 and less money, but that 3 is the big thing to him.

It will be interesting to see is Dodgers, Mets, or Yanks (who I haven't heard of him talking with yet) will go 3. Astros will not and they are correct. I truly believe Crane told JV to go see if he can get that deal.

Was it already discussed why we aren’t seen as a major player for Rodon? It seems like he would be a borderline ideal free agent.

I really don't think we are looking for any major free agent at pitcher. We may get one who is lesser where we see something we think we can "fix", or some minor leaguer we think can potential, but I don't see why we would be in the big free agent market.

Idk about Rodon specifically but I do have some trepidation about the current 6 going in to the season. Especially since it relies on LMJ being healthy for a majority of the season.

This is likely to be an unpopular opinion but if JV can’t find the 3 year deal he’s looking for, I think I’d rather spend on 2 years of JV than to spend $20mm+ per on Contreras to be a splitting time between C/LF/DH. We all know FODB would still give him the Vasquez treatment behind the plate. I know the money isn’t exactly the same with the two but it feels likely that we can only have one and not both.

I feel like fans that don't want their players to do something fun like that are being pissy. Get over it and let the players do something FUN!

I mean 2 of our starters are playing for the DR. Lighten up.

I'd bet that Javier and Frambaw are better than JV next year, I can't get behind paying him that much for 3 years.

We were very fortunate on the injury front this year. If JV is gone (seems likely) I’d like to get a cheap long reliever/spot starter type at least, either in FA or a small trade, to add some quality depth in case we aren’t as fortunate this year. After the names you mentioned it could get thin very quick. Someone in the old Brad Peacock mold

Our old pal Wade Miley is available.

Chris Bassitt or Taijuan Walker could be good options if we do make a run at an established SP.

I agree. But JV isn't going to be taking a 2 year deal for $20m per year.

Wandy Rodríguez still has a few good years in him

Absolutely. Mainly because of Lance, but also they are only going to let Brown throw so many innings. Which is understandable.

Would love bassitt. I am operating under the assumption that LMJ will be injured next year.

Yea, I didn’t phrase that well. I meant I don’t think we’re spending $40 million per on JV and also $20 million per on Contreras. I lean toward spending the $40 per for 2 years on JV over $20 per for 4-5 years on Contreras

The Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers are finalizing a trade that will send outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Abraham Toro to the Brewers for second baseman Kolten Wong and around $1.75 million in cash, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. It’s at the finish line.

BREAKING: Right-hander Jacob deGrom has signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers, sources tell ESPN. Physical is passed. Deal is done. Includes conditional sixth-year option that would take total deal to $222 million. Full no-trade clause. A massive haul.
