Saw that article as well. There was also a bit in there about Crane and Baker nixing the Contreras trade at the deadline because it “wouldn’t be good for the locker room.” But now they’re pursuing him again? Doesn’t add up.

Maybe the losing Urquidy part of it would be bad for the locker room, although he doesn't seem like the team leader sort.
I doubt the Astros are seriously invested in pursuing a Contreras deal, though.

Bakers angle was Contreras was playing for a contract and wouldn't be happy not getting regular playing time to put up numbers and he didn't want someone detracting from the team culture at that point. If Contreras signs he will be the primary catcher.

Sounds like per usual, winning WS is as much random as not.
Marte ended up injured
I expect only a minor deal this offseason in regards to IF/OF depending on what we do with Brantley and Yuli
Too much is dependent on the JV outcome to know at this point

Maybe he’s been transparent about his intentions to take the Astros job if/when it’s offered?

That doesn't seem like a great interview tactic, but they might be able to read between the lines.

Depends on if Crane is going to pay the tax. If he gives JV 40 AAV they probably couldn't even sign Brantley under the tax, much less a bigger bat.

I think the Astros are projected to be around $60MM under the tax after arbitration is done. Tax threshold jumps to $233MM next year and then $237MM and $241MM in '24 and '25.

If Verlander was making 28 in ‘22 and you gave him 40 starting in ‘23, that’s a 12M jump that still leaves you 53 under the tax if Ryno’s numbers are correct.
ETA: Unless those figures are with Verlander off the books. Then never mind.

We just paid him 25 to get a year back from paying him 33 for one game last year
I think you are doing the team a disservice giving him anything more than 30 each for multiple seasons
Just doesn't make sense given the depth that we have pitching wise

Bregman and Alvarez salaries are going up quite a bit. Montero too now.

Holy hell, Bregs is going from $13M to $30.5M
Depending on which site you use, were projected at somewhere between $170-$180 million with current commitments and projected arbitration raises. Luxury tax threshold is $232 million so if you start us right in the middle at $175 million, that gives us about $57 million to work with. JV at 40 million really hamstrings to budget to do much else.

Hope that finger heals properly.

Yeah the Bregman of last year is worth every penny of that deal. The Montero thing doesn’t give them a lot of room under the tax though if Verlander is brought back. I’m not sure how much the tax matters to Crane though

Hopefully not much.

Yeah I think those numbers were pre-Montero deal so his salary comes out of that 57 million wiggle room. Which means JVs 40 million eats up any other room to upgrade the roster. You'd have no choice but to roll with Korey Lee at backup C, Diaz at 1B and Hensley for Utility bench bat.
Crane has exceeded the tax once before and has said he'd be willing to exceed it if they feel like they need a piece or two but he prefers to stay below. I would think if you're going to commit $40 million to a pitcher, you'd like to maximize the chances of that being an effective investment and not sacrifice the roster elsewhere.

Yeah if it does and they signed that Montero deal I’ll be upset
