MLB Trade rumors put out their annual top 50 free agent predictions a couple days ago. Astros mentions:
Verlander: 3 years $120 million
Nimmo: 5 years $110 million
Contreras: 4 years $84 million
Josh Bell: 4 years $64 million
Andrew Chafin: 2 years $18 million

In Crane I trust until the on-field results show we should feel otherwise.

Yes to all 5.
Seems really cheap for Bell.

Despite his disaster stint in San Diego I still really like Bell as a fit for us.

I just can’t justify that in my own mind.

Sources: Bill Firkus, the #Astros senior director of baseball strategy during the 2022 season, is now the point person for the club's free-agent discussions following the departure of James Click.

That's sad. He was only 55.

I agree that does seem cheap for Bell. In the regular season he wasn't good, but I thought he was good in the playoffs, yeah?
Still think he's a good player overall and if he only commanded 4 years and 64 million, then sign me the frick up.

Bell was a 3.0 WAR player last year despite sucking in San Diego. He went for 94/37/116 in 2019 and 75/27/88 in 2021, while posting a 120 career OPS+.
He doesn't strike out too much (career 18.2% compared to MLB average 22.3%) and he walks a good bit.
The biggest issue is that he's a clunker at first base. Just bad all around in the field.

Some stuff from a Michael Schwab article yesterday:
quote:
Prior to the 2021 season, reports surfaced that the Astros were interested in All-Star relief pitcher Liam Hendriks. Sources confirmed to me that the Astros were interested and almost signed him. The story was that Crane told Click to sign Hendriks no matter what. I was told that the contract was almost to the finish line, and then, Click nixed the deal because of a high cost. My understanding of the matter is that Crane became upset that the deal didn't happen, and he would have been willing to spend the money.

Starling Marte was almost an Astro. Sources told me that Crane was adamant that the team needed to sign a high-level center fielder and Marte was on the list. Reports said that the Astros were in talks, and these negations were confirmed to me. The interest was mutual between both parties, and the deal just needed to be finished. Click brought up the issue of former PED use and age then decided to pass on the deal. The reasoning from Click does make sense, but Crane apparently wasn't happy that the team had no clear-cut center fielder, and he wanted Marte on the team.

Meyers showed glimpses of what he could be in 2021, but injured his shoulder in the playoffs and had to get surgery. The different view points on Meyers came to a head at spring training before the 2022 season when there was a disagreement over who should play center field for the team that season. One group loved the idea of prospect Pedro León, but Click was adamant about Meyers. Per people familiar with this meeting, Crane asked Click if he wanted to bet his career on Meyers. Click said yes.

Gives me hope that crane actually wanted marte.that would have been an awesome move. And also could have signed Hendricks for what we paid Montero. Crane better gm than cluck.

Give me nimmo and Contreras and let Diaz earn a DH spot.

Instead we got the ghost of Willie Mays. On defense at least.
ETA: Never mind that Willie Mays isn't dead. That's not the point. If he dies today, that's my bad.
