Told my friends yesterday that losing series to the As and Angels this late in the season should be a fireable offense for the entire front office and coaching staff.

Jeff Luhnow’s biggest accomplishment may have been keeping Crane’s nose out of everything for as long as he did.

It was mentioned in one of the threads last week there shouldn’t be calls to sell at the first sign of trouble. The thing is, this isn’t the first sign of trouble. The organization has been on a gradual decline since 2022. Perhaps that would’ve happened no matter what. But the moves (or non moves) made correlate pretty closely with the decline.
Naming a field manager before a GM was even named. (Pre 2022)
Letting the GM walk immediately after winning a World Series
Hiring an unqualified guy to be field manager
Having a buffoon with stone age thinking as a major advisor to the owner on baseball matters
Undermining two different GMs trying to make personnel moves
Not addressing a shitshow outfield situation for four years running now
Refusal to be real players in the free agent market. Not saying we have to be the Dodgers but other than Hader, we’re never in on anyone major.
Depending on injured players coming back as a strategy for not making trades
Promoting from within to fix the medical staff situation which was a league wide joke
Firing the two shitty hitting coaches only to hire someone with a very similar philosophy
I’m sure I’ve missed some. But the trend is real.

Tangibly, not much of a reason. Done more for PR after a 3-6 homestand against the murderers’ row of Mariners, Angels and A’s capped by blowing a 6-0 lead yesterday.

The wheels were off after the scandal. (Yes we went on to win a WS, but the signs were there) Crane got embarrassed, doesn't want to get embarrassed again, so now he's Jerry Jones.
As long as he is central to the decision making process of baseball operations, this team is going absolutely nowhere unless we magically turn some AAAA prospects into the equivalent of the 2017-2022 core.

I don’t disagree with the trend. And yet the down years are going to end up being a division title and playoff berth, an 87 win season, and TBD on this one, but at least in playoff contention due to the shitty division.
People last year were jerking off to the Mariners management. The Mariners have what, four playoff appearances in 30 years? It can be far worse. The Rangers have had three winning seasons since 2012. The angels and A’s don’t even bother competing.
Would also add that these things can change on a dime. Houston sports fans were demanding the McNairs sell just 3 short off seasons ago. Now they’re arguably the most popular owners in town.

Aside from the PR aspect you can begin vetting and talking to candidates in earnest which they weren’t going to do with Brown still under contract

My theory is this was one of the conditions after the 2017 controversy. May be wrong here but I thought Crane gave Luhnow an open field to operate with complete autonomy across the organization when he hired him. As terms to back off the investigation MLB may have required Crane to be more involved / implement more governance and what we see now is a side effect of that

It’s understandable to be frustrated with Crane, but the first 8 or whatever years of his tenure were the best run pro sports organization I’ve ever followed. I’m not sure if he has it in him to go back to running things that way, but he’s done it once, which is more than you can say for most all major sports owners
