Here is what JL should consider.
1. Does he help the club this year and in the future.
2. Can I get him without giving up tucker,Whitley,Perez, or fisher.
If the answer is yes for both of those questions you need to make it work. Not only for the fans but the players in the club house.
And I think both questions can be answered with a yes.

Verlander and Clippard is pretty close to what folks wanted at the deadline. No lefty is still a hole but we have some righties in the pen who are effective in those situations

probably comes down to how much money the tigers want to eat. luhnow is probably motivated to get this done but the tigers have to help him out in regards to that money

If McCullers is done for the season, which I think is a possibility, you slide Jabroni or Peacock into the rotation and add whichever lefty doesn't suck the least

I think the magic number should be the rest of this year's salary and $16 million over the next two years. If Crane and Co. aren't willing to pay Verlander $20 million each of the next two years, they aren't going to be willing to pay enough to keep this team together long-term.
