an upgrade from Gregerson
An upgrade from 2017 Gregorson for sure. 15 and 16 Gregorson was low 3s era and I'm not confident Smith is that pitcher anymore. I'm thinking he'll be the frustrating 3.50 Era kinda RP prone to random blow ups.

He struck out a ton of hitters last year and walked very few. If we can get him to continue that trend it will be a very good signing

And had a 3.4 era with those improved stats. What happens if those numbers go back to his career norms? Isn’t he 34? Im not convinced a 34 yo all of a sudden becomes an 11 k/9 pitcher when he’s never been a strikeout guy. We needed a bullpen guy and he I don’t think he’ll pitch crunch time innings, so I’m ok with the signing. It’s just more meh for me. Good news is that he has never has an era higher than the mid 3s for a season, so at least there is a history of consistency

Yep. He's basically Qualls.

Brett Wallace.
Quite possibly the ugliest dude to ever play for the Astros, or anyone else for that matter. (not that I go around noticing things like that)(not that there would be anything wrong with that)

Ezequiel Astacio. His face looked like it had been pelted with a bunch of flaming marbles

Willy t was pretty nappy when he entered the league

I hope he makes the opening day roster just because it would be cool for him to make it as a pitcher. shite, he’s probably better than Sipp.

The ugliest thing about Wallace was his swing as it related to contact.
That man made Chris Carter and Jason Castro look like Andre Dawson and Boog Powell.
I swear I remember BW striking out 20 out of 21 ABs.

Last season, Joe Smith was lethal against right-handed batters. He struck out 47 of the 137 right-handers he faced while walking just two all season. Among pitchers with at least 20 innings, Smith’s 1.56 FIP versus right-handers trailed only Kenley Jansen, Craig Kimbrel, and Max Scherzer‘s.

Hector Rondon to the Stros per Rosenthal

Tell me how to feel about that

I wonder what they envision his role to be. If they send Musgrove down in favor of Rondon, I'll be pissed.

Meh. Taking a chance on a guy who was really good in 2014-2015 then developed a HR problem in 2016 and added a walk problem last year.

If Rondon can limit the long ball like he did in 2014 and 2015 then he can be a really good reliever.
If he's going to give up 1.6 HR/9 and 3.1 BB/9 like he did last season, that's not worth much.
He also significantly increased his K/9 in 2016 and 2017 despite his ERA going up both years... not sure if there's a connection there. Maybe going after too many Ks and less pitching to contact led to the walks and homers?
