Darnold: Is this year a fluke or was he just in awful situations before?

He’s definitely getting paid well after this season, but will he continue playing at a high level moving forward? We’ve seen one-hit wonders before. On the flipside, he was in some dogshit situations with New York and Carolina before Shanahan got a year with him.

Some of both. For geno smithing. Geno was really good a couple of years ago and has been serviceable but very mid since. I could see darnold being similar with a non O’Connell level coach

He's always had the talent, just needs a good situation. He's not going to lift others, but in a place like Minnesota he doesn't have to.

All I can contribute is: coming out of college I thought he would be an nfl starter for a decade. He’s strong as an ox.

He still needs a good coach with him, but I think he was just really young coming into the league. Jets and Carolina did him no favors

Combination of finally being able to play with confidence and having by far the best receivers he has ever been able to throw the ball to. Now which one is the chicken and which one is the egg is another question.

He never had any coaching or development of any kind until he was in SF. High school, college, or pro.

The statistical reality is there will be some mean reversion but coaching matters. The $40M question is how much mean reversion

Just proof that QBs (mostly) can't start from Day One?

I’m convinced coaches like KOC can make any competent QB look impressive.

If I’m Darnold, I’m looking at Cousins and doing whatever I can to stay with the Vikings and KOC.

Props to Minnesota head coach. He’s really good offensive mind.

Coaching matters. Experience matters. Wondering if they keep him or let him walk and risk it with JJ, or trade JJ.

The Vikings having Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson and AJones should be the biggest incentives to stay.

Trade JJ McCarthy to the Giants.

Kinda makes you wonder about those before who were drafted into awful situations but didn’t get a chance in a good situation afterwards to showcase their skills

I agree. It’s why teams really need to stop reaching for QBs or expecting them to play right away. Some of these guys need to be developed.

Cousins looked like arse before he landed in Minnesota. The one year he's not there, he looks like arse again. I am convinced KOC's system is QB proof. All QBs in that system perform the same.

Cousins was solid in Washington. He took it to another level in Minnesota.
