Colorado and Deion: You know it's bad when you've lost Joel Klatt

Fox broadcaster Joel Klatt, who played QB for Colorado, has been Deion and the Buffs' biggest cheerleader all season.
He eviscerated Colorado and its coaches in his recent podcast.
The Joel Klatt Show
It's lengthy, so you will have to wade through it. Here are some excerpts:
"Undisciplined play, game management fails, scheme fails, situational football fails from the quarterback"
On Stanford loss: "Colorado gave that game away"; "You look at some breakdowns and failures throughout the team for Colorado. Coaching failures, player failures, scheme failures, missed assignments, undisciplined play, you had all of it. It's a cocktail of all of it."
"There are some game management issues for Colorado that have got to get cleaned up and they can only land on the head coach ... Coach Prime has really got to answer for some poor decisions from a game management perspective."
"They had 17 penalties. 17! Some of them egregious. Guys, stop punching the other team after the whistle. That doesn't take any talent whatsoever. It doesn't take any effort. All it takes is being halfway smart. The undisciplined play was not just a problem in that game, it's been a problem in every game. Colorado now averages double-digit penalties and they are the most penalized team in the nation. So, like, that's a problem."
"Game management issues. There were several. If you're up 29 to nothing, the second half of that game has to look different, because the goal is not to win 63-0. It's just to win. If it happens to be 63-0, fine, but the goal can't be to win 63-0. The goal is to win the game."
"You've got to shorten the game in the second half. You've got to play slower. Maybe not as many passes. You've got to force them to drive the length of the field almost every time they touch the ball."
"The worst thing that you can do, up 29-0, is give a team hope. How do you give them hope? You create a short field. The first series of the second half (up 29-0) Colorado goes for it on 4th down ... Colorado takes a sack. You can't take a sack on 4th down as a quarterback ... that's basically the worst thing you can do on 4th down as a quarterback."
He goes on further and is extremely critical of their usage of Travis Hunter, coming off injury and played 157 snaps. Klatt points out that Hunter was so tired in the second half that Stanford abused him and basically won the game going at him.

Choosing to go first in OT is the biggest dumbass no logic shite ever. Did he touch on that?
Posted on 10/17/23 at 9:12 am to lsupride87
His rationale was the same as the Colorado State game, he'll stay aggressive and believes he has the better QB to score first.

i stopped watching sometime in the 1st half, but as a general observation this season, i don't know why so many teams are hellbent on snapping the ball w/ 15-20 seconds on the playclock when they have large leads, especially in the 2nd half.
absolutely mind-boggling. even if you wanna pass the ball, fine, at the very least, don't snap the ball with so much time left on the playclock. makes no sense. all that extra time that teams leave on the field allows the opponent several extra plays to make a comeback
just like klatt said, this takes no real effort, just common sense and passing 5th grade math

Not specifically, but you could tell he was frustrated about the whole topic. It's like he just found out Santa wasn't real.

Wrong board, post this on the Deion board.

There is no rationale to EVER take the ball first in overtime. It has nothing to do with aggressiveness. It's about knowing what you have to do. Going first puts your team at a competitive disadvantage, period.

which is still totally illogical and stupid becuase if you start on D and the other team doesn't score you don't NEED to be aggressive.

I still have a mild chuckle when I see grown men that have paid jobs in the media refer to him in that way. He's not a transformer. His name is Deion Sanders. Coach Sanders.
Step 1 to having the first shred of credibility in the profession would probably be to stop calling yourself a nickname like you're a little kid playing make believe.

Deion is a pretty good coach, but he does have a lot to learn from these missteps, and I think he will.
Posted on 10/17/23 at 9:29 am to Bjorn Cyborg
He's trying to get his son to NYC for the Heisman, that's why he doesn't slow it down. The blowout they had vs nebraska same thing.

Deion Sanders isn't a very good on the field coach. This isn't some shocking surprise, he has a history.

Based on what? Serious question.
From what I've seen, his only qualification is having a good quarterback for a son. Without Shedeur they are winless.
I'm sure Jimmy Burrow could've won a few games with Joe as his QB. Doesn't mean he's a good coach.

His entire coaching career has literally revolved around his sons.

I was about to ask the same question. As far as I can tell his entire career consists of:
-being decently successful at a shite level with superior talent but without a championship
-beating 1 probably mediocre team and 3 bad ones at the FBS level, with 3 losses to 2 good teams and 1 bad one.
-shilling himself and his brand
I do think he hired 2 solid coordinators and give him credi there. But I'm not sure what woudl really lead someone to say he's a great or even good coach based on this point in his tenure.

Did the Washington St/UCLA game not happen in 2019? That was 32 points.

I’ve listened to Joel Klatt call their games and I feel like he keeps it pretty real. Sure there’s some bias, like Herbstreit has calling OSU games or McElroy with Bama games, but I don’t feel like he’s been some huge Deion cheerleader.

His offensive coordinator, Sean Lewis, is elite and probably the only above average coach he has hired. Half his staff is from the FCS - like 4 from the SWAC, which is the worst FCS conference.
It just shows you how the hype train gets out of control. This coaching staff was being talked about as some elite staff and he was lauded for putting it together. It's shite and I said so at the time.
And even regarding Lewis, the fact that he didn't put the brakes on the offense to win the game against Stanford tells me a lot. That's a bad look for a guy who has been a head college coach at the FBS level at Kent State.
That tells me they are trying to pump up Shedeur's stats and he can't buck Deion on the issue, because I know he disagreed with that strategy.

Not during broadcasts, but on his podcasts and other outlets. He's very professional doing the games.
