Didn't Skip Bertman do the same thing to Ben McDonald at LSU? He pitched McDonald in three out of their four games in the CWS and McDonald apparently was never the same pitcher after that. Coaches abusing these kids arms to achieve personal glory in the College World Series have been going on forever.

You've clearly never been to Corvallis

Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches in one game in 1974. He went on to have a decent career pretty sure. you guys need to lighten up. This guy just pitched the game of his life in something he'll remember forever.

Pitchers these days are too soft. Now I am not saying that some pitchers are not over worked. But everybody is different. Years ago guys pitched on 4-5 days rest regularly with no problem.

Little League allows 17-18 (sometimes 15-16) year old pitchers to throw 315 over 11 days.

105 pitch limit, with four rest days.

Years ago guys were topping out at 91 and hitters weren't nearly as good.

Nolan Ryan was a freak of nature. He was also 27 years old, had pitched seven years in the big leagues and was accustomed to that type of workload which was common back in those days. In other words, it was very different from this situation.

Let’s be honest, it’s not like the OSU coach is ethical.

He threw 23 last night and 129 tonight.

He threw 247 pitches over the last 6 days.
And got 3 wins with the last game being a complete game shutout. He obviously felt fine.

And you can look at it this way: 247 pitches over 6 days is actually somewhat normal for two starts with 5 days rest and a bullpen in between. 105 in game 1, 30 pitch bullpen, 112 in game 2 for example. Not exactly this scenario, but close enough.

Worth it, the kid has all off season to rest.

That's how I'm leaning. If it was a random midseason week then it would be way over board, but they can shut him down for the next couple of months and let his arm get the needed rest.

But he will have a lifetime of memories. I'm sure he would say it's worth it.

Based on how much high schools kids throw he may be injured in the future anyway. There are no guarantees.

The NCAA Tourney is painful to watch with these coaches running these same pitchers out there over and over. Tennessee Tech had a kid who threw 46 pitches, 107 pitches, 57 pitches and 56 pitches in 4 appearances within a wee

So what? That kid won't play pro ball in all likelihood.

Yeah, for players who aren't making a career out of baseball, it's even more acceptable because he has nothing to lose.

I'm open to hearing both sides of the argument. The fact that he's only a freshman makes me feel kind of uneasy about it but I can understand a lot of the arguments in here.

By all accounts this kid is going to be a weekend starter next year with big time draft hopes the following year. They were talking first round pick if his velocity gets better. His changeup was outstanding

I was referring to the Tennessee Tech kid with my second post.

With regard to Abel, I think it's okay in this situation. It's a little more stress, but he wasn't overworked this year and like I said, it's not far off from a typical week of throwing when you count bullpens. He technically just missed an extra day of rest when you include those pitches.

Was definitely questionable, but they seemed ready to pull him right when someone got on, but his stuff only seemed to improve through the late innings. In most cases, I'd say he should have been pulled in the 7th, but with a full recovery following and putting together one of the best games in the history of the CWS, I think its borderline and probably acceptable.

His arm doesn't know what the game situation was. I can understand both sides of the argument, but it's a 5-0 game. I don't see why he had to go back out there for the ninth.

With the national championship on the line, you go with your best option. He was the best option.
