the problem is in college, everybody knows what games are crap... whereas in the NFL they're called "preseason" and there are no crap games in the regular season...

and in high school people don't follow other schools enough to know what games they shouldn't go to (but they do know what the good games are)

exactly

people arguing that a decline is about cupcake games or a less than fair system of declaring a national championship are missing the point IMO because those things have been part of the sport for decade after decade.

the difference now for fans who like college football is the home experience has substantially improved while the in stadium experience has gotten more costly and suffers by comparison

FIFY. The in stadium experience for a passionate fan of the team is still superior than anywhere else. The no-shows are the dilettantes, socialites, and see-and-be-seen crowd.

I love HDTV and a fridge full of adult beverages.

...I also like the bathroom a few steps away, an oven for making wings/pizza n shite, a tablet for tracking other games, another TV hooked up with the other SEC game on, another TV setup so I can peripherally-watch a WAC game that I've bet on in degenerate fashion, etc...

NFL Redzone makes me not want to go an NFL game either, and I'm a huge Saintard. Redzone FTW.

TV plays a big part. Back in the old days you might get 3 or 4 games on tv. Ticket and concessions prices are creeping up to NFL levels and free parking is pretty much non existent anymore.

Why is attendance so freaking important to everybody these days?

Wouldn't viewership be a better indicator?

One of the biggest weapons a team has is home field advantage*

*as long as there is a loud, boisterous crowd in attendance making it hard on the visiting team.

I know I'll get a bunch of anecdotal responses saying how you enjoy going to games, but the statistics don't pan out and will continue to prove me right.

i've been pushing the pro-tv at home angle for years, and it is definitely catching on

i go to 1-2 LSU games a year (i was there last week), and that's fine with me

this week my friends are getting together and it's going to be a much better experience for me

I agree with both of you.

The ironic thing with CFB and the NFL is that TV has made them the richest and most popular sports yet it is killing in house attendance.

yeah it is kind of funny

i think/hope that what will happen is a shift down the line in ticket prices, so that the "true diehard fans" will go

seems like where it is headed, and a good solution all around

if i'm at a friend gathering at a house, i get the vast majority of the tailgating experience, but then i get to watch the game on my preferred vessel (as well as other games, which is crucial to me). plus the conveniences, like bathrooms, are much easier to use

although my fandom is waning regardless

This. I have access to LSU tickets and could go pretty cheaply if I wanted to, but it's just so much easier to stay home and watch it on TV with friends. Granted I'm lazy and literally live within walking distance of Tiger Stadium, but then you have to deal with obnoxious fans, strain your eyes to see replays, and food/drink prices are insane.

I've noticed this too. It's waning in all the sports for me. I always thought I'd be this fantastic sports fan all my life, but when you work two jobs, stay healthy, have a social life, and study for the CPA... there's just no time for it anymore unless it's part of the social activities.

the people watching and hot girls (which was hilarious in the rain, with so many stupid girls wearing white shirts) is the one thing that you can't get at a friend gathering in terms of "tailgating"

there is something about a live game that is hyped up, but that wears off quickly and you only really get it for select games anyway. the first time you leave teh concourse at TS and see the field is worthwhile...but you only get that once a year

I wasn't sure how many state games I'd go to this year, but I'm pretty much just sticking to TV. Not that I "don't want to go", but I've really felt more comfortable with watching on TV than I had anticipated. I've been working for the last 4 months or so, so that makes a difference. I've also found a group of Gator fans in my area, so I get to hit up a bar and watch the UF games as well. The whole dynamic of watching has shifted for me too.
