Adding the 12th game started the ball rolling on this.

I don't think the Cowboy's Classic happens with an 11 game schedule, but generally, fans get very complacent in week 4 every season.

People don't get excited until the conference races really start. Even then, Bama winning 3/4 hurts the overall game. Fans think they have little to no shot to see their team win a NC, and with one BCSNC spot taken before week 1, it makes their hopes thinner.

They sell beer at Cajuns games. Most students still binge drink before because the $7 or so that you spend on a beer in the game is almost enough for a 12-pack of high life.

As much as I root for the SEC every year the sport would benefit from another conference winning. It's hard to care about a top 10 matchup in other conferences if I feel like they will just loose to Bama in the championship anyway.

How does Oregon know if someone stays the whole game or not?

I'm sure they do like the Cane's challenge and hand out vouchers at the gate on the way out of the stadium.

Welcome to 1956

I admire your line of thinking...but it is very outdated.

We're going to see football attendance decline in both the NFL and college for the next 20 years or so.

The fact of the matter is that going to a game just isn't that much fun. It's expensive, crowded, stressful, you have to deal with traffic, drunk idiots, and potentially poor weather. The view of the game sucks compared to what you get on the TV. Sometimes you can't even tell what's going on on the field. Ever been at a game and a penalty happens but you don't even know what the call was? Well, if you were watching on TV you'd know. And with watching on TV you can pause the game, go to a clean bathroom with no lines, eat reasonably priced food that you purchased at the store, keep up with other games at the same time, etc. etc.

I know I'll get a bunch of anecdotal responses saying how you enjoy going to games, but the statistics don't pan out and will continue to prove me right.

I agree with all of this, though it probably won't decline to the apocalyptic levels you're thinking it will.

Schools and pro teams will have to lower food and ticket prices to attract fans back. A game is still a nice social experience, but there are way too many negatives.

I think the big time programs in College with a huge alumni base (Aggies, LSU, UGA, Mich, PSU, OSU, etc) will tend to fare a whole lot better than most. Though, I'd bet that they only reach 90K+ on the marquee games and average around 70 on the shite games.

NFL teams will start to max out on attendance around 55k IMO. Maybe less.

Both make the majority of money through merchandise and TV rights anyway.

If I had my way, I'd take out two games a year. Ten game schedule like in high school. Eight conference games, one homecoming, and one big OOC game.

I agree 100%, but 8 conference games sucks because we have 14 teams. We'd have to go back down to 12 in the SEC.

It'd never happen because people want a clear number 1 for some fricking reason.

Given the TV considerations with the NFL, some teams may start tarping out large sections of the stadium, like in Jacksonville, in order to ensure "sellout" crowds.

Imagine you're an Oklahoma State fan. Your team finishes with the same record as Alabama, however, your team won their conference whereas Alabama didn't even win their division.

And yet Alabama goes to the National Championship game.

How absurd is that?

I don't understand why anyone, including myself, likes college football, because it is the most absolutely stupid system of competition there is.

It seems like many people enjoy the social aspect of the tailgate than the actual game. And I can understand that to an extent. Hell, I have family members who tailgate for every game but rarely actually go into the stadium for the game, or if they do they stay for one quarter or so then go back out and continue tailgating outside the stadium while watching the game on TV or listening to it on the radio. Anecdotal, I know. But still interesting to consider.

LSU made a critical error in encouraging the excessive tailgating culture. Now it's causing a mess on campus and hurting the atmosphere inside the stadium. But it's ingrained and will be hard to scale back or eradicate.

Olbermann called New Mexico State's President the worst person in the world for this:

quote:

Students attending the games will be entered in drawings to win $250 in cash or a black parking pass, a tag held only by top university officials that allows the owner to park in any campus lot.

A student's name will also be selected each game from the list of all students enrolled for a $2,000 prize.

So you can pay the coaches, the ADs, the announcers, but you can't pay the players; and now you can pay the fans too?

I basically agree with this. I do still enjoy going to a game, but only 1 or maybe 2 a year at most. Going to LSU games for me is as much about spending time with friends as actually going to the game.

The terrible schedules in college have to be a big factor. Who really wants to see some of the crap games like we had this past weekend?

the problem with college games is the shitty scheduling. most of the points you made are valid for out of towners and professional games, but not students.

it is not expensive for students, they dont have to deal with traffic (i assume they walk), they ARE the drunk idiots, etc...

they just dont wanna go to the games because they suck dick. they are less fun than the bars. they are less fun than a house party or frat house. there are obvious exceptions like this weekend in athens, but shitty games are shitty.

The lines are pretty ridiculous too. Might as well just bring in a flask.

When was this not the case? You always have to deal with this.
