It’s tough when you are limited to three outfielders. F. Robby is an incredibly underrated player historically, IMO he was better than Clemente and behind only Ruth and Aaron in right field.

I'd rank him in my all time starting dumb frick roster.

On principle, need to find a way to add both Rickey Henderson and John Olerud to the roster.
For the mere sake of the potential that this story could repeat itself again - when they all gather for their first practice:
In spring training 1999, Rickey Henderson of the Mets was reunited with first baseman John Olerud, who had been his teammate with the Blue Jays six years earlier.
As most people know, Olerud had an aneurysm in college, which required brain surgery. So to protect his head, he was allowed to wear a helmet in the field. As the story goes, Henderson was talking to Olerud one day, noticed the helmet and said “You know, when I played in Toronto, we had a guy who wore a helmet.”
“Rickey,” said Olerud, “that was me.”

At pitcher I would have replaced Koufax with Babe Ruth and then put in DiMaggio. Ruth was a helluva a pitcher. At catcher, although I like Bench, there are probably 6 or 7 better including Pudge Rodriguez.
Tony Pena solely based on his catching stance
Still despite everything, I still think there has to be room for Pete Rose at least second team.
Also Bonds has to be utility first team. I don't care about the roids, he was a complete player

Griffey was better than Mays. Don’t let an over the shoulder catch convince you he could do the things Jr could do in the outfield!

Comparable players in all aspects. It's like saying that Pat's cheesesteaks is better than Gino's. You aren't turning down either one.

Mays was better than Griffey.

All things being equal Iwould take Mays as well.....but if I could have both....

I don't think you can name six or seven catchers better than Johnny Bench.

Winning pitchers learn how to win. Look at Steve Carlton
This is asinine. A pitcher could theoretically give up 1 run every 7 innings and still lose every game.

In 1972 the Phillies won 59 games and Carlton won 27 by himself…. Just crazy.

Carlton didn’t “learn how to win,” he started winning huge when he got to Philadelphia and the pitching coach, Ray Ripplemyer, told him to start throwing his damn slider … a pitch the Cardinals had dissuaded him from throwing.

Now pitchers & pitching coaches have so much data. They can see BAA for every pitch type for LH & RH hitters instantly. And still some guys insist on throwing their worst pitch.

The disrespect for Bench here is laughable. Bench is and will always be what you measure Catchers to be.

Piazza was better. Pudge Rodriguez was better. Campanella was probably better in his 11 years in the league....who knows what he would have accomplished. Bill Dickey was probably the best all around. I would not have turned down Bench on my roster, but if it were between him and Piazza on my roster, I'm going to ask Bench if there is another position he would consider playing. I'd probably take Pudge Rodriguez over any of them. I always thought he was the smartest player on the field.

quote:I picked Ivan but I'll agree that bench was great and top 3 or 4 but I choose Ivan I guess I like a big bat. If I went for pure defense then hell Benito Santiago was the best pure catcher defensively I've ever seen. He was literally throwing out runners at 2nd from his knees over and over in "mlb".

A whole lot of disrespect to Tony Eusebio going on in here.

Griffey shouldn't be your DH
This line up to me in all of their prime years would win 6/7 titles
I see you left out gywnn....Tony was arguably the best pure hitter of all time left or right side. Not sure why he is left out of many line ups. He was and still is the best lead off hitter ever. I think he was bat champ like 18 times. No one will ever pass that.
