I just think the Pros FAR out way the cons with this. They’re thinking outside of just having Bears games. If they built a domed stadium in Arlington, they could host CFP Championships, Super Bowls, NCAA Final 4s, Motocross, Monster Trucks and major concerts all year round in a much larger stadium. They shouldn’t settle for anything less than 80k. Lastly, as somebody said, Soldier Field is NOT easily accessible. I went to a Browns vs Bears game years ago and we had to walk a pretty good distance. It was a “Bear” to get to.

They left the stadium to play in soldier field because fan support is too difficult in the suburbs

I don't keep up with MLS - what happened to their stadium in Bridgeport?

It's Bridgeview (White Sox are Bridgeport), but the stadium is still there. It's a nice facility, but it's basically on a concrete slab next to a busy street and a residential neighborhood, with no easily walkable bars or restaurants nearby. And they completely overestimated the draw from the Hispanic and Polish communities in the area to make up the numbers.

They've only played there since '71 so it's not like they go way back at that site. They played at Wrigley before that I believe

Yep, they played at Wrigley as long as they have played at Soldier Field. The Cardinals played there before the Bears did, and it was more of a college football venue for much of its history. It's not even the same stadium it was before the rebuild, so much so that it had it's National Historic Landmark designation taken away.

I'm not surprised the locals are shrieking about this, but it's misguided in my opinion. Most people complain about the damn thing anyway. I feel like nostalgia drives the affinity for it at this point. I don't blame the Bears for finally wanting their own place where they can do what they want without the Chicago Park District having a say.

The biggest issue tho is that they don't own it.

The Packers don't own Lambeau.

My wife's family lives in Des Plaines, which is about 6 miles from the Arlington International Racecourse. I'd be absolutely shocked if the Bears built a permanent stadium there. There's not much supporting infrastructure (no bars, few hotels) in that area. There's a metra (commuter rail line) from the city to next to the horse track, but that can't handle thousands of people. The horse track a 45 minute drive from the city center on good days, and with traffic it can be 1.5 hours.

It does every morning and night.

The Union Pacific/NW line averages 38k riders over a 24-hour period on a weekday. I'd be surprised if it could effectively handle the amount of riders an NFL gameday would bring when everyone's trying to get to a spot at the exact same time.

Do you really think the majority of fans will be riding out from Loop?

Guess what; Most people drive to the game. They do now and they will if da Bears move to the burbs.

Why didn’t they just build a bigger stadium during the Champange season?

They'll add a few extra trains on gameday - don't fret, major cities know how to work out large traffic for events.

does every stadium have to have a roof now????

There's enough indoor stadiums now. Part of the draw for football is the bad weather you see late in the season

it's bad enough a dome replaced open-air in Minnesota. If Chicago does, it might happen one day in Green Bay and Buffalo

That makes sense. Still, I think that location is awful for an NFL venue. There's nothing around there.

That was pretty much the case about 10 years ago.

That doesn’t inherently make it a good thing. It just means that their owners are shitheads who care more about raping fans for $80 parking than they care about delivering an awesome game day experience.

Chicago is one of the best gameday experiences in sports with Soldier Field. If they build some lame mega stadium in the suburbs it will instantly be generic. I hate the idea so much. It would be as bad as the Saints moving to Slidell or something.

The city owns the property and land so no way they get money from any sale.

It's also by their musueam distrui so I'm sure it's not going to be a high rise

Indeed. Open air stadiums have more charm and uniqueness than most dome stadiums. But I also understand the desire to host more events with a dome.

What is interesting is the Packers considered making Lambeau Field have a roof sometime in the '80s. But it never happened. Now, it seems preposterous that the stadium ever have a roof.

I think it would be awesome if a team got a new stadium/arena that had an old retro design as long as it still had modern infrastructure and amenities. But now, many new stadiums/arenas are designed to look like a spaceship from outer space.

They left Wrigley because it was an old small dump and not conducive to football.

Soldier Field is an old small dump.

That’s a selling point, not a drawback. The vast majority of their season ticket holders are in the northern/western suburbs. They would welcome the change.
