Clemson 1981

I was pretty young at the time, but even to me they seemed to come from total obscurity to win the MNC, and went back to obscurity immediately afterward.

I recall during the championship game NBC put up a map of South Carolina, with a star showing where Clemson is located, just for all the folks who weren't exactly sure where or even what Clemson was...

We kind of came out of nowhere in 02, also (at least relative to the previous year).

Yes, Oklahoma and Ohio State football were totally unknown before the last 10 years.

I don't think people get where I was going with this thread...

Obviously not. Maybe if you had said "obscure programs that came out of nowhere to win the national championship" instead of "champion that seemed to come out of nowhere," we would've gotten it. BE SPECIFIC!!!1

This isn't a college team, but how about the '99 Rams? Shitty history. The franchise had just moved. They were 4-12 in '98. They were garbage before drafting Holt and acquiring Faulk, Green and Warner.

Not to mention the person they thought would lead them, Trent Green, went down in the preseason and they had to rally around an AFL QB.

2000 Ravens. Even though the Ravens finished the '99 season red hot down the stretch, nobody (well besides Joe Theismann and Phil Mickelson) picked them to go to the SB that year.

There are a few of these for the NFL and MLB.

Some MLB come-out-of-nowhere champs:

-1997, 2003 Marlins (sub .500 previous seasons)
-2002 Angels (sub .500 previous season)
-2005 White Sox (shitty franchise in general, but not bad the previous season)

Maybe Michigan basketball in '89 when Glen Rice got hot? NC State in '83. Nova in '85.
