There isn’t much debate as to who are the rudest fans in the SEC – 32.2% of those from a Sports Illustrated fan survey in 2009 said that LSU’s supporters are the rudest. But SEC fans must like to be put down because 24.8% of fans said that Tiger Stadium is their favorite place to visit. Well, there’s no denying that Baton Rouge has an unbelievable atmosphere, even if it is a bit rowdy and profane. It all starts when opposing teams first enter the stadium and fans chant “Tiger bait!” at them – and they mean that literally.By the time the game starts, many of the fans don’t know what they’re saying or where they are. LSU home games are usually played at night, allowing their already-juiced-up fans to, um, lather themselves up a bit more with all-day drinking. Tailgating in Baton Rouge is like a scene out of “The Waterboy” on acid, which is to say wilder than your wildest dreams.
Well, we guess debauchery is to be expected when super fans for the school dress up as pimps.
But beyond the weekly Mardi Gras atmosphere, LSU fans have a mean side. It got to the point that university administration had to apologize for a 2005 incident in which fans cracked the windows of Tennessee’s team bus with beer bottles. When females working for the student newspaper disguised themselves once as Alabama fans for a story, they were reportedly groped and called names not fit for print. Stunts like that landed LSU football fans at #10 on GQ’s list of the worst sports fans in America, where they were described as “Deep-Fried Lunatics.”
But most anger is directed at Nick Saban, the coach who won a national title at LSU before he bolted for the NFL and, eventually, (gasp!) Alabama.
Tigers fans are represented by fierce loyalists like The Big Ragoo, branded as the greatest LSU fan alive who ESPN the Magazine described as “half eloquent statesman, half wild man.” He hates Saban for comments the coach made about those in the Bayou that may have been misconstrued but hit a nerve nonetheless.
“If I were him I’d be very discreet,” Ragoo told the magazine, predicting what would happen if Saban ran into others in the Bayou who take their allegiance even more seriously than him.
“He might not make it back.”
Stay classy, Baton Rouge

notice all the teams on this poll have been to a BCS game or really should have been this decade

No one in the ACC should be on this list. Florida State and Virginia Tech are the closest. Maryland would be in the mix if they ever achieved consistent football success. Does anyone remember their "celebrations" after winning the 2002 basketball title?:

Seriously, how are we #2? Because we yell loudly in the stadium? The Tennessee thing is a legit gripe. The female reporters were shown to be trolling idiots with none of the alleged inicdents actually be caught on tape. But to be ranked right below a campus that burns shite yearly? Please. I seem to also remember a video of some PSU fans in Columbus getting pelted with beer cans and bottles. Never have I witnessed that in BR. Also name another campus that will feed opposing fans who don't act like douches more than we do?

But how about some specific examples of reprehensible behavior? Well, posters on Tidefans.com were trying to get a feel for Tech fans before the Red Raiders faced Alabama in the Cotton Bowl after the 2005 season. The highlights? Being compared to LSU fans – always a high compliment if you’re trying to build a poor reputation

Miami probably makes the list because of all the hood rats around the old stadium that robbed people before and after games.

The fact is, the vast majority of all fanbases are nice. Literally, every fanbase is full mostly with nice people. That's just human nature. It's the a) percentage of the fanbase which are jerks (is it 5% or 20%? That makes a big difference) and b) the extent those jerks take things, which give the lasting impression of the fanbase. Not really fair, but the way it is.

They also have been known to throw more than verbal barbs at those they don’t like. According to a Washington staff member, Oregon fans threw “cups of urine and dog feces at the Husky players” during the 1999 1998 version of the border war between the two schools. They apparently felt their tradition of tossing dog biscuits had grown stale.
Riiiiiiiight.
Fans probably shouldn't travel to their rival's stadium if they want to be treated politely. I have brought friends who repped Arizona, ASU and USC up for a game and they thought everything about our gameday was incredible.
I will also say I thought Tennessee's fans were awesome. They were actually grateful to us that we traveled across the country for the game which I thought was pretty cool.
