Here is an honest question?

Why do you care how someone chooses which team to root for?

It really doesn't make you or them more or less of a fan of the sport.

Hell I choose teams by uniforms at one time.

I pull for Caltech because they've been undefeated for over 20 years and I'm a big time frontrunner.

That's how I became a Rams fan.

Only thing I hate is when people I know have become "die-hard" only since whatever team has started winning and try and give me crap for liking Nebraska or the Rams.

I've found most true fans don't care who you root for. Normally it is the bandwagon ones who care about such things.

I only care in so far as it reveals their character and personality.

There are million life choices that people make that move the needle one way or the other on whether that person is trash or not.

Put them altogether and you got a pretty good idea on who to avoid in life.

It reveals nothing of character.

One of the reasons I went with UF over FSU. I was only 7 though.

1. Michigan - undergraduate/grew up here
2. Toledo - dad played for the Rockets. He transferred from OSU, so luckily I didn't get anything from that.

I went to the University of Kansas for 2 years...I hated every minute of it from a fan perspective. I grew up and LSU fan, I went to games since I was old enough to walk, and I spent every Saturday rooting on my tigers. I just couldn't replicate that as a Jayhawk. Made good grades, had good friends, and a damn good time, but not being passionate about your school is pretty shitty. Hell I rooted for K-State in big basketball games vs KU. Tried to transfer to LSU and once they told me they didn't have the funds to offer an OOS scholarship, I went to Wichita St. Had a great time as well and really bought into the basketball program, but it never reached that level of pride I have for LSU. Some think it's weird, those who know me understand. I will attend grad school at LSU eventually though.

7. Florida gators, but I rarely actively root for them.

yeah ya got me. I didn't proof read a forum post before hitting Submit.

I was going to say "I did go" but decided to change it to "I went" but didn't backspace enough. Oh well.

Fans that support a school they didn't graduate from will always be a tier below those who support their alma mater.
You can tell that the violators of this rule secretly believe in it because they get really offended when you make this proclamation.

I went to LSU. I root for LSU.

I have "sister schools" in other conferences. These are schools for whom I superficially root based on different relationships and life experiences I've had. Wisconsin, UCLA, West Virginia, SMU, Syracuse, Navy, and ULM are my sister schools.

That's a pretty fair list. I think that the whole childhood thing (#7) can be a powerful (and "legitimate") reason for choosing a school and I might bump it up to 3 or 4.

Luckily for me Auburn is 1, 4, & 7. But I have to say if I didn't end up going there and still had 4 & 7 that would probably trump 3.

What if you don't like your alma mater, or what if you alma mater sucks/doesn't have a big program?
