Fans that support a school they didn't graduate from will always be a tier below those who support their alma mater.

This isn't always true.

Agreed. Fans that actually give money are the best kinds of fans.

Sorry, alums that don't donate and just watch games on TV unless one of your friends has a spare ticket.

I see myself as a Bama fan, first. It's what I "identify" myself as for college sports.

I then cheer for State.

I'm like this. There's no way I could be the fan I am of LSU for multiple teams. Of course I want Miami to win, but it doesn't matter when I wake up on Sunday like LSU does. The people who grew up rooting for LSU with me that just switched it off and over to their university as soon as they enrolled didn't have enough Bama in them to begin with.

Here is an honest question?

Why do you care how someone chooses which team to root for?

It really doesn't make you or them more or less of a fan of the sport.

Here is on honest answer for you, I really don't, it's just something to discuss. Personally I've never understood how people root for teams they have no really connection to other than that teams is good and on TV, at least past the age of 15 or so. As a kid I was a Braves fans because they were on TV, I like Dale Murphy, Bob Horner and all, but as i got older, I gravitated to the Astros since I lived in Houston and my friends and co workers etc were Astro fans. As for colleges, same thing, if you went to school there, you should root for them. Now i get it if you went to a DII or something and grew up a fan of the local team or your dads school or something, but that is still with in the rules in the OP (maybe they are better called guidelines). Now just because you are a fan of a team that doesn't mean you can never cheer for other teams of course, if you team is out, its always fun to root for some one. That's the fun of watching sports, taking sides, us vs team. I'm an LSU fan, but I have a lot of friends that are Texas fans, so when Texas played USC, I was rooting for Texas because I wanted to see my friends win but I'm not a Texas fan.

Highly disagree.

Nobody in my family graduated from UGA, and only a couple even went there at all. Yet I started going to games at age 3 and by age 7 went to every home game every year. I've been raised a UGA fan since I could walk. I did end up going go UGA, but had I not gotten in and had to go elsewhere for education, I damn sure wouldn't have put that school above UGA. Ditto if I went somewhere for a graduate degree as well.

I know this is common, especially at larger schools. But I can't cheer for a college team if I never attended the school. I was never an LSU fan for that reason.

I'm not knocking people who do this, but it's not for me.

1. LSU
4. McNeese (Both Parents)
5. Southeastern
6. Southeastern (Little Brother, SiL)

My little brother is going to be pissed in Nov when I go to the game wearing blue and gold.

1. Your undergraduate alma mater - This should be the first and foremost team you root for, above all others. The only exception is if you attend/ed an institution that does not field a football team. Should that institution start up a football team, it automatically becomes your first team. It is your alma mater, for god's sake.

This can get trumped one of two ways.

1. You or a family member get hired to work for another school's football team.
2. A child or sibling becomes a player at another University.

It's not automatic though. For example, Butch Jones and his wife are obviously UT fans, but it was OK for Archie Manning to still be a #1 Ole Miss guy even while Peyton was at UT.

Sorry, alums have already "donated" about $100k in tuition and fees to become an alum. The non-alums are just trying to catch up.

Auburn fan (grew up in Northeast Alabama)
In the Navy since I was 21 (18 years)
Graduated from University of Oklahoma. Attending grad school at OU also! So have lots of Sooner gear lately.

Got accepted into Indiana, Okie State, Penn State, Northwestern, and Troy for grad school. Don't pull for any of those teams.

So, should I stop rooting for the school that my entire family went to, one great grandfather was the dean of the business school, another a regent and writer of the alma mater, or the school that I graduated from?

And you still couldn't get in?

I never understood why people care which team another person cheers for. Hell the damn Schools/Athletic Depts/coaches/players don't care. They love all the $$$$$$$ those fans bring in.

Might have been able to pull some strings and get in, but my folks weren't willing to pay the enormous OOS tuition.

That's what some people don't understand. It's not hard to get into certain schools. Some just don't want to pay the OOS Tuition when you can get a degree from a school in your current state and make more money.

I like LSU. But if i'm going to live in Missouri I'd rather have a degree from a school in Missouri/Kansas/Arkansas/Oklahoma/border state. They'll look out for people in this area before someone from LSU. But I know LSU athletics/TAF love that money I donate to them each month, hell they sure do call when I miss a payment

I also get letters from University of Missouri when I miss a pmt on tuition. That's why I cheer for both schools. Involves $$$$, get mail from both schools, emails, invites to athletic events, etc.

I grew up a Huge Texas fan, mostly out of resentment for the majority aggy surroundings

While they aren't direct rivals to LSU I had to give that up. I still follow them casually though.
