A 49-minute press conference just concluded. Governor, Senator, Alexandria City Council were all on stage. + Monumental reached framework of agreement to move Caps and Wiz to VA. + Ground would be broken in 2025. Arena would debut for 2028 seasons. + Project to have an estimated impact of $12B and create 30,000 jobs.

Chinatown will almost certainly fall back into being a crime infested hellhole now because all of the bars and restaurants that thrived being near the stadium will leave. None of these places can survive on the 1K people that go to Mystics and Georgetown games

You don’t think there will still be daily events at Cap one? Ted still owns it. The arena isn’t going anywhere. Just the anchor tenants.

Ted Leonsis this morning: "My belief is that at Capital One Arena, we can host women's sports. Our intention is to expand here and keep Capital One Arena in DC a great place." Sounds like he wants the Mystics to play at COA. Says they'd keep some concerts there as well.

Daily? I doubt it. What else are you going to put in there? There aren't that many concert acts that can fill that venue and many will want to be in the new stadium where they can charge more for the newest, most modern suites etc.

Also, any investment is going into the new arena and it will just become progressively more outdated.

I really wish Georgetown had the space and funds for like an 8,000 person arena on campus so they didn't have to play at Capital One.

They’ve made massive investments the past 5 years. It’s been highly renovated.

DC owns the land where Capital One is built, while Monumental Sports owns the building. Leonsis pays $36M a year just for the land, which is apparently way higher than most other owners who lease the entire stadium

Ted's Alexandria stadium lasted all of two months

quote:

Negotiations to lure the NHL’s Washington Capitals and NBA’s Washington Wizards to northern Virginia have “ended” and the proposal to create a development district with a new arena for the teams “will not move forward,” the city of Alexandria said in a statement Wednesday.

Yeah, there wasn’t a whole lot of local support - just the opposite in fact - and none of the real, important details ever seemed to be ironed out. It came off as a rushed, generic concept of “Hey, why not over here?” Which, again, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ted expected this. When this was announced months ago DC suddenly rushed to put together it’s own deal to offer.

That Chinatown area - is it properly fricked now? I saw the British rock group Coldplay there on their groundbreaking "Viva La Vida" tour and the area was rough around the edges but still vibrant and cool.

Arena was becoming dated even back then so I'm sure it's bottom 5 in the league now along with NO, OKC and Portland

Ted, now he’s trying to whore himself out to Maryland. Such a scum bag.

Had to crawl back to DC.

I love how people call new and fancy stuff "bland" just because it is not old and falling apart.

He’s honestly on the level of Dan Snyder in my opinion. Dan would’ve been a much better NBA/NHL owner than fat Ted because he would’ve bought championships. They’re equal pieces of shite and I’m happy this whole fiasco finally shed some light on this tool and opened more eyes. Lot of Caps fans are not going to renew their season tickets after 8 retires. He pissed off a lot of the loyal fans. People forget he fought a Caps fan for talking shite to him about the state of the team at a game once.

quote:

WASHINGTON — Washington Capital owner Ted Leonsis was involved in a physical altercation with a season-ticket holder at the MCI Center on Sunday night after being taunted and jeered by fans during the team’s loss to Philadelphia, the Capitals’ first home game since Leonsis traded All-Star winger Jaromir Jagr to the New York Rangers. The fan, Jason Hammer, 20, a Washington, D.C., resident, said Leonsis grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground after he had led a mocking chant of Leonsis during the game and hoisted a sign chiding him. Some witnesses explained the confrontation differently, offering varying accounts of the severity of the clash.
