Yeah. The schools got away with not paying players for a long time while they were pulling in bank.

However, in reality, the schools are using NIL as a direct payment to players. How?

Because very little NIL contracts are based on the value of the athletes for marketing purposes to the businesses they’re contracted with. It’s straight up related to getting them on campus to begin with not tied to marketability.

It was always sold as a type of side hustle to make extra money on the side in local car commercials and autograph signings and what not.

Anybody who wasn’t a complete idiot knew this is exactly what it’d be.

Blame the NCAA who approves the deals

Or are you like the others that didn’t know a clearing house was instituted with the house settlement?

How?

The schools run collections that dish out directly for no show jobs under the guise of NIL.

They also call boosters and tell them that they need a new cornerback and it’s going to cost $100,000. This may not technically classify as “direct” but it’s pretty much direct.

Why is this “phrase” still used? Teams are outright paying HS seniors. Please explain to me how a kid in HS gets NIL money vs outright having deposits made into their account. I really don’t care, but it’s like schools don’t want to admit it. Kinda like the phrase “student/athlete”

I don't see how you can get rid of it without collective bargaining or making all athletes sign contracts, neither of which is likely to occur.

Lol

Mingo thinks the nil is on the non sketchy side.

Give me what your taking , nil allowed the worst of the worst access to players. And we're having more gambling investigations and scandals since nil started than we had in last 20.

This definitely wasn’t happening before. Just no way.

That’s because the government stopped acting like gambling doesn’t exist once they legalized it

It will be interesting to see how much "teeth" this actually has in the face to legislation and expected litigation to sidestep this requirement. The recent Tennessee legislation essentially told the NCAA "we don't give a damn about your rules. We are going to try to make sure Tennessee schools/booster can pay players as much as they want...without any NCAA interference." If the legislation proves successful as an end-around the House settlement you can bet your last dollar that, at minimum, the other SEC states aren't going to stand pat and allow Tennessee to have an advantage in the arms race.

Personally, I think the House settlement will be litigated/legislated into irrelevance pretty quickly.

there are lots of people who buy a Jersey with current players' name and number.

and a shite ton of people were excited to know a new NCAA football game was going to happen with current rosters.

so dont sell them with a name. Sell them with just a number so you have deniability that it’s a certain player (for example a #9 LSU could be any dude who wore #9, not necessarily Burrow)

How would that be “illegal”? I’m pretty sure MLB teams actually wear jerseys in games with no name on the back, as well as college football teams

All MLB jersey sales are collected by the MLBPA and distributed to its members under a collective bargaining agreement.

LSU currently sells Jerseys with no names on them directly from their website

why does LSU offer jerseys without a name on their website if it's illegal?
so does Fanatics, Academy, Dick's, SEC Store, etc.
