They've been using that drawing for a few years now. I doubt that the finished product will look anything like that.

That is/was the approved design for the stadium. They've just been waiting on funding/city approval. I doubt it changes drastically.

I've seen a ton of approved designs/renderings change once you get closer to construction.

Wish this would have happened back in early 2000s when I lived there. Legion Field was a dump by then and in bad parts of town. Sucked for the UAB program.

I'll believe that a stadium will be built when I actually see it built. Birmingham once broke ground on a dome stadium, and that's about all that was done.

I hope UAB can get a stadium, because no one wants to go to Legion Field anymore. It would be great to get one near campus.

Not at all. As a Bham resident, I think it’s a great step forward. Legion Field is a dump that should’ve been torn down years ago. I get embarrassed just thinking about what out of town fans must think when they go there for the Bham Bowl. I think a small outdoor facility like this is the way to go as long as it done in conjunction with major upgrades to the BJCC.

Just hope there’s enough capacity to handle all of the Auburn fans who temporarily became faux-UAB fans during that whole ordeal.

Good for soccer becoming further established in Bham too with the USL team

That's the main reason I'm in favor of the stadium.

Does this remind anyone else of a tennis stadium?

It does.

What really pisses me off is that ALDOT won't be moving the interstate even though it effectively cuts this whole project off from the rest of downtown.

You can't go under a bridge?

You can but its not that conducive to major foot traffic and it's an eyesore. Really hard to link Uptown/BJCC to the City Center when there's an interstate right in the middle of it. There have been a bunch of efforts to get it moved but ALDOT won't budge.

The interstate is also a big psychological barrier.

It should be once construction is done.

I'm guessing rerouting an interstate so that people don't have to walk under an expressway is quite a lofty spend for not much benefit. 10s of millions of dollars and construction for a few months shutting down a main artery? Seems like a not great idea on multiple levels. Better idea would be to simply find a different spot for the stadium.

UAB's twitter just posted a rendering that looks quite a bit different from the old one previously posted.

Wish the location was better, ie somewhere near Regions Field. But a stadium is a stadium. Soccer should be fun here.
