Earnhardt was the last death in NASCAR if I’m not mistaken.

Although the number of people who fly in helicopters yearly is much much higher than folks who compete in professional racing series

Id venture to say helicopters have a higher death rate than nascar

There's been roughly 1500 nascar races and 28 deaths. So about 1.8% rate that a race has a fatality.

Quick googling shows that at least one source has a 1.8 fatalities per 100,000 flight hours in helicopters.

Don't know how that translates but interesting info.

Death in NASCAR is EXTREMELY rare

no shite, huh? it's almost like you have no idea that that's NOT what I'm trying to say... i'm not sure how i can dumb down my outlook on the inherent risk of driving at unsafe speeds for you, nor do i even feel like really trying...

This making his death shocking.

to some, i bet it was... but if you can't see how driving inches away from another car at those speeds, and at that time, with unsafe equipment, is risky, then i don't know what to tell you.... it's not like the dude drowned swimming in a pool... the dude was fricking driving 200mph, bumping into people, etc... shite, I'm sure even the driver's themselves would tell you how fricking dangerous the sport COULD possibly be...

In regards to the nascar vs nfl viewership numbers, what exactly are you comparing? Average viewership for a regular season nfl game vs a nascar race? How many races are there per season; isn’t it like 10-15?

Ok

Each race has 36 drivers averaging about 3 hours

So that’s roughly 108 hours per race

At 1500 races, that’s 162,000 hours of driving

At 28 fatalities, that’s a fatality every 5,800 hours for its entire history

Now, most of the fatalities were in the early days as well so this is heavily slanted

Helicopters currently have a fatality every 55,000 hours

In the NASCAR Cup Series, there are 36 points races in a season, plus an exhibition race before the season and an All-Star race during the season.

now do 1975-2000... wanna venture a guess as to which sport had the higher ratings?

wanna look at revenue, see which one generates more money? which other metric would you wanna TRY to compare these two, b/c i promise you, no matter which one, the NFL will pretty much always come out on top...

Senna
I will be honest, I have never heard that name in my entire life until this thread

He died at 34 in a race and was maybe the best driver of all time. He was a much bigger global star than Dale. His funeral was likely the biggest of modern times, an estimated 3 million people.

His death was big around the rest of the world. There were a million people lining the streets of São Paulo, Brazil for his funeral procession.

IMO, Senna was the most talented racecar driver who ever lived, no matter what type of car racing.

I don’t know all of the exact numbers or metrics. The point is that, when Earnhardt died, NASCAR was huge. It was right up there with the other big sports. That’s why his death, while probably not as big, is one of the most comparable in terms of the shock factor it created.

Add to the fact that his crash and subsequent death is still controversial today.

If you want to learn about someone who had a relentless will to win, at absolutely whatever the cost, you should learn about Senna. ESPN produced a documentary about him about 10 years ago, that I believe is still on Netflix. It’s simply titled “Senna.”
