Clemente and Kobe are both in the 10-20 range in their sports

There’s some type of bias against Kobe here. Kobe was a better basketball player than Bird, magic and a bunch of other dudes that are routinely rated ahead of him.

Lebron, Jordan and a few of the dominant big men were better than Kobe; that’s it.

Kobe had a way bigger world appeal than Earnhardt. Kobe was the sports star of people who are in their 20s and early 30s

If you are going world appeal Bryant doesn't hold a candle to Senna.

Besides, he was retired while Senna died while millions were watching.

Either way, the hero worship is comical.

Kobe was a global icon
He was a top ten all time nba player
Won an Oscar
Huge in china, Nike global brand ambassador

Some of the posts in this thread are about deaths that are bigger to them, this is huge on the international stage

RIP

he's in that top 10-15, all-time, range... which isn't anything to sneeze at, btw...

Death in NASCAR is EXTREMELY rare

It wasn't when Earnhardt was killed.

Not common, but hardly EXTREMELY rare.

Neil Bonnet was killed in an almost identical wreck to Earnhardt's during a practice.

Search youtube for Tony Roper, Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin, JD McDuffie, etc, etc.

How close was Clemente to retiring?

Huge Clemente fan here. Easily the best arm I ever saw.

He was probably 2-3 seasons from retiring. He was still in great shape the year he died.

Had Clemente played in NY or LA, he would have been a huge star.

Trust me, Clemente was a truly great player.

Better careers than Kobe?

Jordan
LeBron
Bird
Magic
Kareem
Wilt
Bill Russell
Shaq
Tim Duncan
Oscar Robertson

That’s not a remotely controversial opinion.

Eta: but this is a top 3 death in the US (along with Earnhardt and Clemente, although I would say it’s the biggest) and on the global stage the only one bigger was Senna.

Here are players in that discussion:

Top five:
Kareem
Wilt
Lebron
Jordan
Russell

Top ten probably ahead of Kobe
Bird
Magic
Shaq
Duncan

In the conversation with Kobe:
Robertson
West
Hakeem
Elgin Baylor
Dr. J

Still playing and could even end up top 6
Durant
Curry
Harden

Some people even debate some of the top five players and some put Durant top ten already. Some put Magic and/or Bird higher. It's a matter of opinion altered by fandom, age, and personal likes and dislikes. For people to be objective is fairly impossible.

i mean, i guess it’s not as crazy as I made it sound but he’s definitely top 10 for me. it’s just hard to compare players at different positions and also time periods in which they played. also i think Kobe was a better all around player than magic. only thing magic had on Kobe was obviously passing ability

harden’s defense alone should keep him out of that discussion

I agree mostly. If he wanted to do more to become an all time great Harden would both have to play exceptionally in a lot of playoff series and have to be more consistent on defense when it mattered.

I also hate his game abusing the tendency of refs to bail out star players but that's more of an aesthetic dislike than a fair criticism.

I find it interesting how people are still comparing Kobe to other players less than 24 hours after his untimely death. I thought his passing would put an end to these stupid ranking lists and fan wars for good. Who gives a frick if Kobe is a top 5 or top 10 or top 15 player of all-time? He should just simply be remembered as one of all-time greats who inspired millions and played a significant role in growing the game worldwide.

Michael Jackson death was way different and not everyone was shocked or sad.

If people are talking Michael Jackson, then Elvis needs to be mentioned.

42 years old and it was like a death in the family for people my parents age.

Sportswise the only one even close for shock value was Len Bias. Top draft pick to dead in 48 hours.

There's a lot of factors that go into how "big" a death is in the sports world.

How big of a name was that person in their particular sport?

How big of celebrity/name was that person outside of their sport and to the general public/world?

How untimely or shocking was their death?

Kobe checks all 3 boxes.
