Isn’t nascar/auto racing extremely regional? Earnhardt’s death may be bigger than Kobe’s in the south, but not in the northeast or west coast.

Thats how popular Earnhardt was

He made NASCAR the most watched “sport” in America, ABOVE THE NFL

Think about that

It was a big deal nationally but Kobe literally transcended sports. He was just Kobe. This is bigger.

I think many have forgotten how huge NASCAR was at the time. While it did not have the international popularity the NBA had, it was still huge in the U.S. (and not just in the south). NASCAR doesn't have that now, but it did then. Earnhardt was a huge part of getting NASCAR there, as well.

I'm not saying Kobe's death isn't bigger than Earnhardt's. I'm just saying, if you're looking for a sports death to compare Kobe's to, Earnhardt's is one the most comparable.

Meh Earnhardt was the bigger name with the same amount of championships at the height of the sport and had a shocking death during it.

How close was Clemente to retiring? I thought there was a belief among the Pirates that he was close to finishing up his career.

His last three seasons he batted .352/.341/.312 with 37 Hrs. Won the gold glove all 3 years and finished no worse than 13th in MVP voting. Including a top 5 finish his 2nd to last season.

I’m not saying one was bigger than the other, both were tragic and had a worldwide impact. To suggest Earnhardt’s death was regional is ignorant.

Dale Sr's death was huge and it's impact directly led to the sport of NASCAR becoming a major sport for a decade. People tuned in immediately thereafter to see the reaction to it, Dale Jr won the first race back at Daytona and the sport took off.
Kobe was a bigger star by far though and it's probably a bigger shock, as you know going into a NASCAR race that death is possible. So I'd say Kobe is a more shocking one, but Dale's the bigger impact

Kobe is the biggest star to die at such a young age. I think Earnhardt’s death was a big blow to NASCAR as it’s popularity is way down from where it was. Basketball will still be popular.

NO it was the exact opposite. go look at TV ratings and attendance in the 10 years before his death and the 10 years after.

Earnhardt died competing in his event. Is was earth shattering.... but different circumstances. Two names that died in similar fashion happened in 93. Davey Allison (future hall of fame career) and Alan Kulwicki (defending cup champ). Neither of which register half the magnitude of Bryant. He retired 4 years ago and was one of the top 5 all time. This is arguably one of the biggest sports deaths ever.

a shocking death

can you really say that it was shocking, given the fact that he was driving a car purposely over 200mph, with little safety equipment, and lax regulation/safety oversight?

i mean, yeah, he WAS the biggest name, and it was unexpected and untimely, but shocking?

There honestly hasn’t been that many big sports deaths

Dale, kobe, and Clemente are the only monumental ones I can think of on an individual level

Are we not counting Lou Gherig though? Because if we are that’s clearly the biggest sports death in our nations history

Dale Earnhardt walked on water in the South. Bigger than Jesus. It was shocking

Gehrig’s had a period to prepare for it. When he announced he had ALS, everyone knew there was a clock on him. Bryant was on a routine helicopter ride and crash. Earnhardt had survived dozens of crashes worse than the one that killed him. Suddenness weighs heavily.

really hard to compare events so far apart in completely different media climates.
