But the event that would be the most insane in sports today hasn’t even been mentioned yet. In 1949 the entire Torino soccer team died in a plane crash except for an injured starter and the back-up goalkeeper. This was the dominant team in the world following World War II, with the team winning three straight titles and it’s squad forming the base of the national team.

Ahem...page 5:

In 1949, the top Italian soccer club Torino (Grande Torino) was entirely wiped out in a plane crash.

At the time, they were four time defending Italian champs and in first place with four matches remaining and ultimately declared champions again.

Torino players also made up 10/11 of the Italian national team starting lineup. It took Italy two decades to reclaim international prominence. Italy had won the last two world cups played before the crash (WWII intervened).

Kobe was one of those things where I'm going to remember where I was when I first saw the news. To me, that's the ultimate test.

Ok, this is pretty important to you huh? I already forgot when I heard it first. It was by text message from a fraternity brother. It was either before I volunteered at the dog center or after. My life went on

Okay...good for you I guess? I never was much of a Kobe fan so I'm not particularly torn up over this. But when a pop-culture icon dies in a tragic accident (particularly one that you essentially grow up with on your TV almost every night), it sticks with you a bit. Hell, I've never watched a NASCAR race all the way through and I still remember hearing about Dale Earnhardt's death.
